Former Obama Scientist: Give Climate Science Some Space
Only Al Gore and his ilk are stating the science is settled on climate change. Scientists, like Steven Koonin, who served as undersecretary of science for the Department of Energy in Obama’s first term, says science can only say so much. In an editorial in The Wall Street Journal, Koonin says science cannot answer what the climate will do in the future, and the clamor for answers from activists and politicians alike is cheapening the conclusions scientists make about the climate. “Any serious discussion of the changing climate must begin by acknowledging not only the scientific certainties but also the uncertainties,” Koonin writes, “especially in projecting the future. Recognizing those limits, rather than ignoring them, will lead to a more sober and ultimately more productive discussion of climate change and climate policies. To do otherwise is a great disservice to climate science itself.”
