Print Journalists Break from White House Press Pool
About 90 journalists who cover the White House for print publications have created a new way to share their reports independent from White House oversight. Because the reporters covering the White House cannot all attend the same events, they pool reports. However, the White House manages the email list and sends it out to about 8,000 subscribers. But recently, the White House has edited the material. In 2012, Joe Biden tried to edit the pool over his “they’ll put you back in chains” comment. And a few months ago, the White House tried to edit a report about a White House intern fainting during the press briefing. An independent pool is important because, while the power of the press is diminished and often sympathetic to the powers that be, the people deserve a report of what its government does free from government interference.
