Military Awards Contracts to Supporters of Afghan Insurgency

The U.S. military has officially ceased operations in Afghanistan (but not finished the job – there’s a difference). It has taken its hand from the bicycle seat to learn if the Afghanistan government can peddle on its own steam. And close on the heels of that news is the quarterly report by Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction. Amidst the concern of the growth of poppy production in the country, the Washington Free Beacon reports the IG finds that the Army awarded government contracts to people who supported the enemy. IG John Sopko wrote: “The Army’s refusal to suspend or debar supporters of the insurgency from receiving government contracts because the information supporting these recommendations is classified is not only legally wrong, but contrary to sound policy and national-security goals.” Sopko continued, “I remain troubled by the fact that our government can and does use classified information to arrest, detain, and even kill individuals linked to the insurgency in Afghanistan, but apparently refuses to use the same classified information to deny those same individuals their right to obtain contracts with the U.S. government. There is no logic to this continuing disparity.” It’s the same kind of politically correct logic that left Iraq the way it is today. More…
