Berlin Wall Fell 25 Years Ago
Ronald Reagan in his “Tear Down This Wall” speech, told the world at Brandenburg Gate, “As long as the gate is closed, as long as this scar of a wall is permitted to stand, it is not the German question alone that remains open, but the question of freedom for all mankind.” Twenty-five years ago, that wall of oppression was reduced to rubble. A former East Berliner leads a united Germany. “We can change things for the better – that is the message of the fall of the Berlin Wall,” Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel said, “especially for the people in Ukraine, in Syria and in Iraq and in many other regions of the world where freedom and human rights are threatened or even trampled. It is a message of confidence in our ability to tear down walls today and in future, walls of dictatorship, violence, ideology and hostility . . .
