Memo to Hillary: ‘Inevitability Is Off-Putting’
As the 2016 presidential campaign kicks off, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has some words of wisdom for his fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton: “Well, I think first of all, Hillary Clinton, Secretary Clinton, excuse me, has been an extraordinary public servant and would be a terrific candidate for president. But I think that the narrative that it’s inevitable is off-putting to regular voters.” The narrative of her “inevitability” has somehow stuck even after her defeat at the hands of the junior senator from Illinois in 2008. Patrick continued, “I don’t mean that as a criticism of her. I just think that people read inevitability as entitlement. And the American people want and ought to want their candidates to sweat for the job. You know, to actually make a case for why they’re the right person at the right time.” Frankly, that’s an impossible case for Clinton to make.
