Troop Morale in the Tank
The United States military handed combat command over to the Afghanistan government Monday and will continue to incrementally bring the 13,000 remaining troops back home between now and the end of 2016. Only a small residual force is expected to remain for the protection of the U.S. embassy by the time the next president enters the Oval Office. But while Obama is fulfilling his pledge to take boots off the ground, the battle turns to troop morale. New evidence suggests the administration’s handling of the war on terror – and it’s not far-fetched to say Obama’s social experimentation on the military – has significantly dampened the spirits of America’s Armed Forces as servicemen and women struggle to decipher the next step. The Military Times reports that a “survey of 2,300 active-duty troops found morale indicators on the decline in nearly every aspect of military life.” According to the survey, morale dropped by 35%, from 91% to 56%, between 2009 and 2014,.
