#illridewithyou: Leftmedia Fall for Another Hoax
The terrorist attack in Sydney, Australia, earlier this week was not enough to distract Muslim sympathizers, including Rachel Jacobs, an aspiring politician and lecturer in the Land Down Under. Just after the attack, Jacobs took to social media to document a personal account with a, presumably, Muslim woman aboard a train. According to Jacobs, the woman removed her hijab as details of the terrorist attack began unfolding. During a train stop, Jacobs recounted, “I ran after her at the train station. I said ‘put it back on. I’ll walk with u’. She started to cry and hugged me for about a minute – then walked off alone.” The story went viral, thanks to a TV content editor, eventually prompting the popular #illridewithyou Twitter hashtag. Great story, right? Except … well, that’s not really what happened. Jacobs later penned an article to offer this confession: “In my Facebook status, I editorialised.” In other words, she lied. Jacobs continued, “I wanted to tell her I was sorry for so many things – for overstepping the mark, for making assumptions about a complete stranger and for belonging to a culture where racism was part of her everyday experience. But none of those words came out, and our near silent encounter was over in a moment.” Alas, the Washington Examiner noted, “It looks like news outlets have been fooled once again into reporting a story that was just too good to check.” More…
