Sony Does About-Face, Will Show ‘The Interview’
Unfortunately, the move may be too little, too late, as Sony’s initial knee-jerk decision to cancel “The Interview” sent a clear message of weakness. But hey, better to reverse course later than not at all. Sony Pictures executives changed their minds Tuesday and approved the comedy film’s premier on Christmas Day. According to The Wrap, “The plan is to release the film simultaneously in participating theaters and via video on demand.” They add, “The release will likely be in the 200-theater range; exhibitors typically cap the rollout of films that offer day-and-date VOD [video on demand] at around 300 sites, because it usually cuts attendance significantly.” Why the about-face? That’s speculation at this point, but we’re glad to see some common sense prevail, even if it is late in the ball game.
