A new report from the Marriage and Religion Institute gives us the most startling picture yet of America's family breakdown, and it also helps explain the criminal culture plaguing young blacks. According to MRI, "The Index of Family Belonging -- the percentage of U.S. teenagers aged 15 to 17 who have grown up with both biological parents always married -- is 46 percent. The biological parents of the remaining 54 percent are either no longer married, or never did marry." That's down from 63% in 1950, and black teens are disproportionately affected: "The Index of Belonging is 17 percent for Black teenagers compared to 54 percent for White teenagers. This marks a 21 percent decrease in family belongingness for Black teenagers since 1950, and a 13 percent decrease for White teenagers." Put another way, there's an 83% chance that a black teenager has parents who have gone their separate ways. Is that what MLK had in mind? No government policy can replace what only a family can provide. Shootings, gangs and promiscuity will only metastasize as long as America neglects the underlying reason for today's cultural decay.
