A group of 24 Republican lawmakers have come to the defense of U.S. Army Chaplain Joseph Lawhorn, who was disciplined for sharing his faith in a suicide prevention class. In a Feb. 5 letter to Secretary of the Army John McHugh, the lawmakers wrote that the Army's discipline of Lawhorn "sends the wrong message not only to chaplains of all faith traditions throughout the Army, but also to soldiers as well, that spirituality and religion are not welcome in the Army as viable methods for coping with suicidal thoughts or other personal issues more broadly." So the Obama administration expects our brave warriors to fight and die for our country, but it insists on stripping chaplains of the ability to minister to them in times of dire spiritual need.
