Americans Abandoned as Yemen Steams Toward Sectarian War

The U.S. pulled its troops from Yemen as that nation’s government collapsed. There is no operational U.S. embassy in the country split between al-Qaida, Iran-backed Houthi rebels and the Saudi Arabian-led coalition. Now, as an Iranian fleet tries to break the Saudi naval blockade to provide arms and supplies to the Houthis, the Obama administration has no plan to evacuate the 3,000 to 4,000 American citizens trapped in the country. Oh sure, the U.S. military will board a ship flying the flag of Panama to search for potential weapons going to the conflict, as it did on April 1, but the best extraction plan the State Department can muster is to post a notice on its website saying that an Indian naval ship will be leaving the country and it will accept Americans. “Unfortunately,” the notice added, “we don’t have information on who to contact to board this ship.” American security: You’d think that would be the motivation of any U.S. foreign policy strategy, but the Obama administration is comfortable abandoning as many American citizens as those who died on 9/11 in a country that is quickly turning into a battleground between Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia Iran.
