Prosecutors Charge Six Baltimore Officers

Maryland State Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced Friday morning that all six police officers will be charged for their actions that resulted in the death of Freddie Gray. “To the people of Baltimore and the demonstrators across America,” Mosby said, “I heard your call for ‘No Justice, No Peace.’ Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man.” The decision came shortly after the medical examiner’s office presented autopsy results to prosecutors. “The findings of our comprehensive, thorough, and independent investigation coupled with the ME’s determination that Mr. Gray’s death was a homicide which we received today, has led us to believe that we have probable cause to file criminal charges,” Mosby added. “Following transport from Baker Street, Mr. Gray suffered a severe and critical neck injury as a result of being handcuffed, shackled by his feet and unrestrained inside of the BPD wagon. At no point was he secured by a seatbelt while in the wagon contrary to a BPD general order. Despite stopping for the purpose of checking on Mr. Gray’s condition, at no point did he seek nor render any medical assistance for Mr. Gray.”

Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey notes, “The DoJ could decide to sit this out given the rapid action from Baltimore and Maryland in filing charges. Don’t bet on it, though. They took a long, hard look at Ferguson and got criticized for coming up empty. They won’t want to repeat that experience, especially when the nature of the charges make it very clear that the crimes alleged took place explicitly due to abuse of authority in violation of civil rights.”
