Democrat Wants to Require Insurance for Gun Owners
It’s a bill that will accomplish the goals of those who want to restrict the Second Amendment all in the name of “safety.” Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) introduced for the second time her Firearm Risk Protection Act, legislation that would require anyone buying a gun to have liability insurance. If a purchaser were found to be buying without insurance, they would be slapped with a $10,000 fine. First, such a bill would raise the cost of exercising a constitutional right, making it that much harder for the poor to defend themselves. Second, requiring insurance creates a larger paper trail for those who want to track the sale of firearms. “We require insurance to own a car, but no such requirement exists for guns,” Maloney said in a statement. “The results are clear: car fatalities have declined by 25 percent in the last decade, but gun fatalities continue to rise.” We’re not so sure insurance caused that reduction. If so, then let’s pile on the health insurance! Don’t want to get heart disease or cancer. Furthermore, this bill is not about preparing for a catastrophic event — say a citizen needs to cover legal expenses if he or she is sued for using a gun in self-defense.
