Clinton Was for the Trade Deal Before She Was Against It

After Barack Obama’s bid to get fast-track trade approval was dealt a humiliating defeat by members of his own party, Hillary Clinton ultimately sided with Nancy Pelosi, the legislation’s most influential foe. On Sunday, Clinton encouraged Obama to “listen to and work with his allies in Congress, starting with Nancy Pelosi, who have expressed their concerns about the impact that a weak agreement would have on our workers, to make sure we get the best, strongest deal possible. And if we don’t get it, there should be no deal.” But a CNN analysis reveals that she was for the “weak agreement” before she was against it. On at least 45 different occasions, then-Secretary of State Clinton praised the Trans-Pacific Partnership, beginning in January 2010. As recently as January 2013, she said, “We’ve used trade negotiations over the Trans-Pacific Partnership to find common ground with a former adversary in Vietnam. And the list goes on.” Contrast that with what John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign chairman, claimed over the weekend: “I don’t think there’s ever been anyone more consistent in their entire career.”
