Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) has introduced a bill entitled the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017. The bill would “terminate” U.S. member status in the United Nations, end U.S. funding of the UN, and remove the organization’s headquarters from U.S. soil. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), a cosponsor of the bill, argues it’s needed because “our sovereignty as a country is harmed by our membership in this body.”

The bill has little chance of passing, but it does highlight the growing dissatisfaction many Americans have toward the globalist organization. The UN’s record on various issues has been rather mixed to put it mildly. At times UN peacekeepers have acted as little more than lawless thugs, and its agenda to disarm law-abiding civilians is downright tyrannical. Add to that the most recent action of the UN Security Council passing a resolution to call Israel to stop its settlement building on disputed Palestinian land. Sen John McCain called it “another shameful chapter in the bizarre anti-Israel history of the United Nations.” UN membership consists of virtually all the world’s worst dictators and strong men.

All that said, and while abandoning the grossly flawed UN would be satisfying, leaving it would effectively leave the U.S. in a worse position on the geopolitical scene as far as leadership is concerned. It’s arguably better to be involved with the power for significant influence rather than to abandon the institution. Undoubtedly, the U.S. under Barack Obama more often took a back seat at the UN. However, with Donald Trump determined to lead with an America first policy, and his choosing of Nikki Haley as ambassador to the UN, the U.S. is in a much better position to once again take the lead. As Haley has stated, “I want to bring back faith in the UN. I want to show that we can be a strong voice at the UN. I want to show that we can make progress and have action at the UN.” Here’s hoping the Trump administration can move the needle.
