Stop Resisting Arrest
If young black men who encounter police would stop fighting back, they’d stay alive.
Welcome to Minnesota. Again. “The Land of 10,000 Lakes” has managed to start our spring season with yet another chain of “racial” events. Another young, unarmed black male has been fatally shot by a police officer. If it sounds like I’m cynical, it’s because I am numb to this melanin media madness. This police shooting began with yet another traffic stop for a minor infraction but escalated to resisting police.
The man, Daunte Wright, 20, who died Sunday after a run-in with police in a suburb of Minneapolis, was driving an SUV with expired license plates. Wright also violated a Minnesota law that forbids drivers from hanging air fresheners and other items from their rearview mirrors.
“He was pulled over for having an expired registration on the vehicle,” Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said Monday. “When the officer went over, an item hanging from the rearview mirror was spotted.”
It was after that, Gannon said, that the officers discovered a “gross misdemeanor warrant” for Wright’s arrest had been issued.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott, who is black, said the shooting of Wright was “heartbreaking, unfathomable.” He added, “Our hearts are aching right now, we are in pain right now, and we recognize this couldn’t happen at a worse time right now.”
Mayor Elliot went on to say, “In this country, if you’re black and you get pulled over by the police, you have a very much higher chance of being dead just because you’re black, and just because you’re encountering police. That is a fact we have to all wrestle with. We’ve seen this far too many times where a young black man or woman is pulled over by police or encounters police and they end up dead. People protesting are asking when will this stop.”
This is complete foolishness and utterly irresponsible rhetoric from the mayor of Brooklyn Center. I have worked with juveniles over the years and they hate three things: their fathers, the police, and all authority. What Mayor Elliot should have been saying was, “In this country, if you’re pulled over and resisting arrest by the police, you have a much higher chance of being killed just because you’re noncompliant, and just because you’re disobedient to police orders.”
Another police shooting involving yet another race-bait narrative of a wannabe thug used to demean the authority of police. I have three sons and I train my boys to obey me and all authority including teachers, pastors, principals, and the police. This is setting them up for success, not blatant failure. Make Fatherhood Great Again! What if all dads would teach their boys how to obey and comply with authority? If black males want to stay alive with the police, stop resisting arrest!
