Tuesday Executive News Summary

Democrats abandon “choice” as euphemism for abortion, Hillary supporters hamper Durham’s jury selection, California’s women’s board law ruled unconstitutional, and more.

Top of the Fold

  • Democrats abandon “choice” as euphemism for abortion: The House Democrats’ pro-abortion group that has long gone by the moniker “Pro-Choice Caucus” has decided to abandon the term “choice” in reference to abortion. It now calls it “harmful language” and advocates instead for the word “decision” to be the new euphemism for abortion. The change in terminology is already underway, as pro-abortion Democrats chanted “my body, my decision” following the Senate’s failed vote to codify and expand abortion as a constitutional right. Democrats are old pros at the terminology game, which obfuscates their genuine political agenda. But Democrat strategist Lis Smith recently warned, “If this debate devolves into policing of terms like ‘pro choice’ ‘pro life’ and ‘safe legal and rare’ — we will absolutely lose it.” The great irony here is that the etymology of the word “decide” literally means “to cut off,” as in eliminating. So, in one sense, the Democrats are finally being more honest about what abortion is — the cutting off or elimination of a preborn human life. More likely, the change is because “choice” inherently presents alternatives to abortion, as well as raises the issue of choice regarding whether or not to engage in sexual activity that could lead to a pregnancy in the first place.

  • Hillary supporters hamper Durham’s jury selection: The jury selection for John Durham’s prosecution of Hillary Clinton’s former lawyer, Michael Sussmann, got underway on Monday, and it became clear that Durham will have a tough time convincing a jury that may be heavily biased toward Clinton. Many of the jurors expressed both distain for Donald Trump as well as admiration and support for Clinton, which isn’t surprising given that Hillary received over 90% of DC residents’ votes in 2016. Several of the jurors indicated that they had donated to Clinton’s campaign. Judge Christopher Cooper noted that the “case certainly has political overtones,” but he emphasized that “we’re not here to relitigate the 2016 election.” He added, “Donald Trump is not on trial. Hillary Clinton is not on trial.” The question is, in a city that is overwhelmingly political and Democrat, can Durham get a fair shake, let alone win a conviction? Furthermore, the judge has limited what testimony Durham is allowed to present, specifically testimony that debunks the Russian collusion hoax. The trial will certainly be an uphill battle for Durham.

  • California’s women’s board law ruled unconstitutional: Favoritism is anathema to the Constitution, as equality under the law is the standard espoused by the Founding Fathers. Unfortunately, Democrats and the Left have all too often rejected the equality principle in favor of grievance politics, which is a form of favoritism. They pit one group against another and design policies that favor “marginalized” groups. California has repeatedly provided examples of this leftist favoritism at work, but one such law has been unsurprisingly declared unconstitutional by a Los Angeles judge. The Golden State’s law requiring corporate boards to meet a gender-based quota was struck down by Superior Court Judge Maureen Duffy-Lewis. This judgement follows an earlier similar ruling that also declared unconstitutional a state law that had required corporate boards to include racially/ethnically diverse or sexually deviant individuals. Companies that failed to adhere to the law could be subject to hefty fines. That this law was overturned should come as little surprise. Prior to the law being signed by then-Governor Jerry Brown in January 2019, then-Secretary of State Alex Padilla warned, “Any attempt by the secretary of state to collect or enforce the fine would likely exceed its authority.”
