Desperate Democrats Refuse to Move on From J6

Having failed miserably to address the issues that most concern the American people, House Democrats are throwing up a January 6 Hail Mary.

Tomorrow, Thursday, is the biggest of days for House Democrats. Faced with an almost-certain shellacking in November’s midterm elections, they’ll be engaged in an act of pure political self-preservation.

But they won’t be attempting to pitch us on their plans to reduce this bone-crushing inflation and right our nation’s economic ship. No. Instead, they’ll be selling us a shamefully one-sided work of historical fiction as their “Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol” holds a primetime hearing on Thursday night to tell us about their findings from that unarmed non-insurrection of 518 days ago.

Have you heard? There was a political protest that day, and it got out of hand. Trump supporters, encouraged by their president to “peacefully and patriotically” make their voices heard, were further encouraged by FBI agents provocateur to storm the Capitol in protest of what they believed to be a rigged 2020 presidential election.

Apparently, no one has told these House Democrats that the American people have long since moved on from that dark day, and that they have far more important things to worry about — like, say, the price of gas and the availability of food and the diminished value of their retirement accounts.

Memo to Nancy Pelosi and her unipartisan committee: It’s the economy, Stupid.

“Just a few days ago,” writes columnist Byron York, “we were told that June would be Economy Month, when the Biden White House wanted to ‘pivot’ from whatever it has been doing to spend June communicating its ‘accomplishments on the economy.’ But now, on June 6, less than a full week into Economy Month, we find out that this is Jan. 6 Week. The House Democrats’ committee to investigate the Capitol riot will have a prime-time hearing on Thursday night, and it’s spending the first days of this week trying to build excitement about the findings.”

Just how serious are the Democrats about this production? So serious that they’ve hired the former president of ABC News, James Goldston, to produce the broadcast, which we’re told “will be filled with never-before-seen surveillance footage of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, over 1,000 interviews and depositions with witnesses, and a variety of other explosive documents and tips.”

But nothing about the price of gas and the availability of food and the diminished value of retirement accounts.

Democrats have been doing their best to distract us from the very real challenges confronting our nation because they have no solutions to those problems. So, instead, they orchestrate the very public arrest at Reagan National Airport of former Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro, a 72-year-old former business school professor who had absolutely nothing to do with the events of January 6. As Tucker Carlson reported Monday night: “They handcuffed Peter Navarro. They put him in leg irons, and then they threw him in a cell. He’s now facing years in prison. So, what did Peter Navarro do to deserve treatment like this? Well, he resisted a subpoena from the January 6 committee.”

House Republicans, though, won’t be playing along on Thursday. In fact, they’re planning to offset the Democrats’ primetime partisan charade with their own counterprogramming. As the Washington Examiner reports: “Republican leadership in the House will address the media at 10:45 a.m., an event that will include Reps. Jim Banks (R-IN) and Jim Jordan (R-OH), both of whom were rejected by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from sitting on the select committee investigating the Capitol riot. Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik of New York, and Republican Conference Secretary Richard Hudson of North Carolina are also scheduled to appear.”

Will the Democrats succeed? Will they convince the American people that the thing they should be most concerned about during those kitchen-table talks is the events of January 6, 2021?

It’s doubtful. But it’s all they’ve got.
