Rainbow Mafia Calls for More Censorship
Conservative free speech is apparently too much for certain snowflakes to handle.
We could’ve sworn Pride Month was last month. Then we remembered that the Rainbow Mafia has a rust-like quality: It never sleeps.
So it was Wednesday, when the president of the pressure group formerly known as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (TPGFKAGLAAD for short) complained that social media platforms are unsafe for the LGBTQ+ community and called for increased censorship of the conservative voices that she believes are imperiling her community. As The Washington Free Beacon reports:
GLAAD, an NGO that formally collaborates with Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok and works to “accelerate acceptance” of the “LGBTQ community,” called on tech companies to amend their algorithms so they don’t “amplify harmful content, extremism and hate.” GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis singled out narratives advocated by “right wing media and politicians” as threats warranting content moderation. The group urged social media companies to prohibit individuals from referring to transgender individuals by their biological pronouns and using their pre-transition names.
Perhaps, though, GLAAD’s own exclusivity is playing a role in this alarming lack of accelerated acceptance. After all, GLAAD is an acronym that’s stunningly non-inclusive — indeed, breathtakingly devoid of Bisexuals, Transgenders, Questioners, and Plussers.
“At this point, after their years of empty apologies and hollow promises, we must also confront the knowledge that social media platforms and companies are prioritizing profit over LGBTQ safety and lives.” So screeches Ellis in an open letter at the beginning of GLAAD’s annual “Social Media Safety Index.”
Ellis continues: “This is unacceptable. Here at GLAAD we will continue to reach out to platforms in real time about content and policies that place LGBTQ users in jeopardy. This Index and our larger program will continue to demand that social media platforms make their products safe for LGBTQ users, and for everyone.”
We hereby link to this 46-page document for those of you who’d like to read it. We, unfortunately, are trying to cut back, but there’s plenty of fascinating content under such headings as “Dangerous and Discredited” and “Targeted Misgendering and Deadnaming Policies.”
Indeed, if there’s one issue that we believe stands as The Great Stain upon Our Nation, it’s deadnaming.
If our tone seems unduly harsh and unsympathetic, that’s because it is. When it comes to matters of free speech, we’ve seen and experienced firsthand the damage that censorship can do. If the Rainbow Mafia wants to be seen and treated as an equal, then its leaders will have to start donning big-boy pants and growing thicker skin.
We don’t believe for a minute that such a metamorphosis is likely — at least not anytime soon — so we’ll continue to call them out whenever they try to suppress the speech of others. Intolerance, after all, is a two-way street.
Will we ever be free of this recurring sense that the Rainbow Mafia is chirping in our ear, demanding that we celebrate its courage and telling us how our freedom of expression is killing it? A man can dream, we suppose. But, as the inimitable Babylon Bee put it at the end of Pride Month, we Americans can now look forward to “11 more months of still pandering to the LGBTQ community.”
