The IRS Will Target You Next

Democrats aim to supercharge the agency to hit up the middle class for more tax revenue.

Democrats are one vote away from weaponizing the Internal Revenue Service against the American middle class. With Joe Manchin doing an about-face on his opposition to Joe Biden’s Build Back Better spending binge, now reduced in scope and dubiously called the Inflation Reduction Act, the IRS is on the cusp of a windfall to the tune of $80 billion.

To put that in perspective, the IRS’s annual budget is $12.6 billion. The additional $80 billion would be spread out over the next nine years, with the predictable Washington selling point that this IRS “investment” will reap a projected $200 billion in additional tax revenue thanks to more accurate tax collection.

And where will the lion’s share of this “lost” tax revenue come from? Despite the Democrats’ favorite talking point of making the wealthy pay their “fair share,” the vast majority of the collected tax revenue will come from hard-working middle-class Americans.

According to the Joint Committee on Taxation, an estimated 78% to 90% of the additional tax revenue will come from those making less than $200,000 a year. Meanwhile, just 4% to 9% will come from those making over $500,000.

To be clear, over half of the $80 billion is specifically earmarked for “enforcement,” which includes “litigation” and “criminal investigations.” This means that IRS agents are effectively going on the warpath to squeeze as much out of the middle class as possible. Whereas wealthier Americans have the means of fighting the IRS with lawyers, tax consultants, and accountants to help them navigate the litany of confusing tax laws, most Americans can’t afford such services. If the IRS targets them, it’s often simply too costly to litigate any claims.

Even as Biden promised to not raise taxes on Americans making under $400,000 annually, he and his fellow Democrats aim to do just that while gaslighting the public on what their latest bill would do. So, even as Americans are struggling with spiking inflation, the Democrats have come up with a plan to squeeze even more hard-earned money out of their hands in order to feed even more out-of-control government spending.

And a final observation: For some reason, the IRS is stockpiling millions of rounds of ammunition, having accumulated more than five million rounds. So far this year the tax agency has spent $750,000 on purchasing ammunition. Why would America’s tax-collecting bureaucrats need an army’s worth of ammunition? Is this yet another underhanded effort by the anti-gun activists to drive up the cost of ammunition? Or is this something Americans should be very worried about after Barack Obama and his deep-state army of Lois Lerners weaponized the IRS against conservatives?
