Federal judge appoints special master, Canada stabbing kills 10, Obama wins Emmy, and more.
Cross-Examination
Federal judge appoints special master: U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon ordered a special master be assigned to “review the seized property, manage assertions of privilege and make recommendations thereon, and evaluate claims for return of property” regarding the documents that the FBI seized in its unprecedented raid of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. Last week, Cannon indicated she was sympathetic to Trump’s claims, which raises the question why did she wait over a week to make this decision? Clearly, with the documents in the Justice Department’s hands since the raid early last month, the DOJ has already had plenty of time to review them. Of course, Trump’s legal team also dragged its feet in calling for a special master, the aim of which was to leverage the best political optics. The question of executive privilege, which Trump has claimed and which the DOJ has essentially dismissed, has not been legally decided. That creates quite the conundrum for the DOJ should the court end up ruling in Trump’s favor. The DOJ certainly looks motived by political expediency to get Trump, so rather than tread carefully, it rushed in igniting a political firestorm that has only generated more distrust of an agency already reeling under a cloud of anti-Trump political bias.
One suspect dead, another on the run in Canada stabbing that killed 10: A mass stabbing in an indigenous community on Sunday in the Saskatchewan province of Canada left 10 people dead and 18 others injured. One of the two brothers who were the prime suspects in the attack has been found dead. “His body was located outdoors in a heavily grassed area in proximity to a house that was being examined,” Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported. The police further noted that the injuries to the body did not appear to “be self-inflicted.” The brother still on the run is believed to be injured. He has a long criminal rap sheet dating back years. Police believe that some of the victims were targeted while others were random. A motive for what is one of the deadliest mass casualty attacks in Canadian history has yet to be determined. That said, this murderous attack highlights the fact that the tool, in this case knives, is not the cause of crime. The criminals wielding the tool are responsible for this atrocity.
Obama wins Emmy: At the annual Emmy Awards on Sunday, Barack Obama received an Emmy for “outstanding narrator” for the Netflix documentary “Our Great National Parks.” This award comes on the heels of the Grammys having recently given Obama two awards for his narration of his autobiographies. Leftmedia outlets were quick to celebrate the achievements, noting that he was halfway to becoming an “EGOT” winner, someone who wins all four major entertainment awards — Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Just 17 individuals have accomplished this feat, but all of them happened to be professional artists. One cannot help but observe that at the same time the Leftmedia has been going out of its way to vilify Donald Trump as evil incarnate, it has gone to the opposite extreme in an effort to deify Obama as “the greatest ever.”
