Celebrity Endorsements Before the Midterms

Democrats and their policies have even lost the love of Hollywood elites.

Today is Election Day. Happy midterms!

Though celebrity endorsements aren’t worth much — they hardly change anyone’s mind — they are much more intriguing when higher-profile celebs go against leftist talking points. This is all the more notable because in this political climate, that sort of off-the-reservation thinking is liable to get them canceled by Hollywood.

Elon Musk is the first person of interest in this cadre of heterodox celebs. His defection from the Democrats is not that shocking considering he had already shared that he voted for Congresswoman Mayra Flores, a Republican, earlier this year. Musk’s message to his Twitter followers this week was: “To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic.” He also pointed out that staunch Republicans and Democrats are set in their vote; it is the independents who decide election outcomes. Musk’s theme this past year seems to be restoring the balance of power. It’s part of the reason he pursued buying Twitter in the first place.

Comedian and actor Rob Schneider voiced his discontent with the Democrats in sharing that California had gotten so bad that he moved his family to Arizona. He has long criticized the Democrats for their heavy-handed overreach during COVID, and his outspokenness then stymied his career. Now that he is free and out of showbiz, he has focused on his family and is voting for a candidate who aligns with family values — gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake. In his statement to his fans, he wrote: “My family left California & moved to the free state of Arizona because individual liberties were trampled in the guise of liberalism which was just disguised authoritarianism. The lives of Americans have been made more difficult under these Dem run states. I’m voting for Kari Lake.”

As for the A-list actors and performers, Chris Pratt, Katy Perry, Gwyneth Paltrow, Snoop Dogg, and Kim Kardashian have publicly declared that they are voting for Rick Caruso for Los Angeles mayor over incumbent Karen Bass. Though both are Democrats, Rick Caruso was a former Republican. Bass is largely considered the more progressive of the two candidates. Pratt, Perry, and Paltrow all voiced their dismay at their home of LA being degraded by bad governance and that perhaps a change of leadership would start to turn it around. It’s going to take more than one semi-moderate mayor to lift that city out of the quagmire, but the fact that celebrities are being confronted with the reality of Democrat governance and its consequences is very interesting considering how much of a bubble these people live in.

When even big Hollywood elites are able to quit pretending LA is all hunky-dory, it’s a testament to how desperately out of touch the Democrats are with the consequences of their radical agenda. Musk, Schneider, Pratt, Perry, and Paltrow may not be the most definitive canaries in the coal mine, but they’re certainly indicative of a larger movement away from a Democrat Party that has driven us off the deep end.
