Last week, I also wondered what goes on in a number of feverish little brains, courtesy of people who exhibit a combination of cluelessness and self-absorption that would be truly disturbing in a better world. Unfortunately in this world, it's business -- or is that brainless -- as usual. We begin with the latest cause du jour, as in the kidnapping of 276 girls by a radical Islamic sect known as the Boko Haram. For many feverish little brains who ought to know better, the Boko Haram's latest atrocity is somewhat surprising.

The highly secretive Democracy Alliance (DA), which takes great pains to keep its work disbursing millions of dollars to left-wing causes beyond public scrutiny, has made a foolish mistake. According to the Washington Free Beacon, a document left on the floor following the DA's latest meeting at Ritz Carlton hotel in downtown Chicago reveals the names of a number of wealthy individuals committed to moving U.S. policies to the left. Wealthy might be an understatement. The document has a list of new DA "partners" who must each contribute $30,000 in dues per year, plus an additional $200,000 in spending to groups supported by the DA. It also reveals the identities of DA "advisors," foundation participants and other individuals who are getting a "sneak peek" at the DA's activities. These partners include top labor, financial and business leaders as well as heirs to billion dollar fortunes, all of whom are recognized as large Democratic campaign contributors.

As the old expression goes, "half a loaf is better than none." And whether Americans realize it or not, that's all they got with the Supreme Court's latest ruling on affirmative action. The 6-2 decision, upholding the ban on racial preferences with regard to admission to the University of Michigan law school, was as narrow as it could possibly be. "This case is not about how the debate about racial preferences should be resolved. It is about who may resolve it," wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy. Sorry, Justice Kennedy, not good enough. Don't get me wrong. Any move in the direction of a society where merit trumps quota-mongering is OK by me. But who's kidding whom? Either the Constitution of the United States means something, or it doesn't.

As the self-appointed hatchet man of a Democratic Party determined to divide America for political gain, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has been on quite a tear. Apparently unfulfilled by his demonization of the Koch brothers as "un-American," or branding ordinary Americans who expressed dissatisfaction with ObamaCare as liars, Reid has focused his attention on rancher Cliven Bundy and the people who came to his defense when Bureau of Land Management (BLM) officials decided a paramilitary assault was the best way to handle a long-standing case of delinquent grazing fees. "Those people who hold themselves out to be patriots are not," Reid declared. "They're nothing more than domestic terrorists. I repeat: What went on up there was domestic terrorism." While it is true Bundy hasn't got a legal leg to stand on, Americans might wonder why a United States Senator would forcefully and repeatedly inject himself into this relatively insignificant matter. Or is it insignificant? Perhaps it's time to shed a little light on Harry Reid himself.
