I get it. I understand Obamacare is a total crock. I know it's going to make our current health care system even more expensive, more complicated, more irrational and more socialized than it already is. I know it's something that needs to be repealed, delayed, defunded, shredded, stomped or killed forever by any legislative means necessary.
The Idiots Against Guns in the media and Congress overdid it this time. Not wanting to miss a chance to politicize a shooting tragedy, the anti-gun nuts went berserk Monday when news broke that a man had gone on a rampage at a D.C. naval base and killed 12 people. Long before the facts were known or clear, The Washington Post, The New York Times, CNN and their liberal cousins launched their latest gun-control jihad.
Did you see the hopeful breaking news about Syria? "Russia takes control of Syrian chemical weapons." That was the headline I saw on the Daily Kos website.
John Kerry put on quite a war dance in the Senate on Tuesday. The Secretary of State, backed up by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs Chairman Martin Dempsey, went before the Foreign Relations Committee to urge senators to support the newly drafted resolution giving President Obama authorization to use airstrikes in Syria. Kerry made some impressive arguments in favor of military action.
I don't know who's more confused about Syria, President Obama or me. With his alleged use of poison gas against his own people, including women and children, Bashar al-Assad of Syria has crossed our president's famous red line -- again. But unlike the last time Assad crossed the president's red line, this time President Obama means business. No, seriously. He does. Really. He's not just talking you-know-what.
There you go again, Hollywood. You've taken a great story about a real person and real events and twisted it into a bunch of lies. You took the true story of Eugene Allen, the White House butler who served eight presidents from 1952 to 1986, and turned it into a clichéd "message movie." "Lee Daniels' The Butler'" stars Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, a fictional character supposedly based on Eugene Allen's real life. But let's compare the two White House butlers.
Turn on the TV. This week the "big news" is the birth of a British royal. Even Drudge ran the birth of the Prince of Cambridge at the top of his page, treating it like it was the biggest event out of Europe since D-Day. Maybe the media wanted to change the subject to something pleasant -- or completely unimportant -- but the arrival of Kate and William's baby boy was a timely blessing.
In a better world we should never have been subjected to the Zimmerman trial. But politically motivated prosecutors in Florida turned a local tragedy into a race crime, and then the media turned a murder trial into a primetime soap opera. The trial accusing George Zimmerman of murdering Trayvon Martin wasn't about seeking justice. It was a ginned-up, politically motivated morality play presented on the national media stage.
Overseas the Arab Spring is turning into the Arab Nightmare that everyone but the Obama administration always saw coming. At home the Obama Crew is fighting to socialize all of America's health care system, strangling the energy industry with new emissions regulations, and being exposed for ordering federal employees to spy on each other. And what do our mainstream media think is the most important issue of the day? The minute-by-minute play-by-play of the Zimmerman trial.
I've seen the future of America -- and it's going to be dumber. I saw a glimpse of where America is headed last week when prosecutors in the George Zimmerman case put Trayvon Martin's "not-girlfriend," Rachel Jeantel, on the stand. Jeantel was on the phone with Martin only minutes before he was shot and killed in his fight with neighborhood watch volunteer Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla.
Will the left ever stop playing the race card? Not in my lifetime, it won't. The Obama left in this country acts like we're still living in 1960, when racism was legally, socially and morally sanctioned across the South and elsewhere. Here's a newsflash, folks. It's 2013.
What the heck is wrong with Mexico? It's got everything it needs to be a prosperous First World country. It's got a $1.7 trillion free-market economy -- the 12th largest in the world. It's got 116 million of the hardest working people on the planet. It's got its own oil, gas, silver and other natural resources. It's got beautiful beaches and ancient ruins to attract tourists. So why is Mexico such a mess?
It's no news to anyone that I disagree strongly with President Obama on just about any issue or policy position you can name. But I'm not the least bit uncomfortable saying I admire something about the president that transcends politics and makes him a role model for every man in America. President Obama is a good father.
Jay Leno told his studio audience the other night that President Obama should forget his plans to close the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay and instead close the IRS. The applause was instantaneous and the laughs were loud and genuine. Most ordinary Americans would have whooped and hollered in favor of Leno's idea long before they learned the IRS has been caught targeting conservative political groups and wasting millions on moronic employee-training conferences.
Scandal after Obama scandal. Outrage upon Obama outrage. Remember the Benghazi cover-up story? Forget it. It's been thrown out like last week's garbage and is now buried deep in the mainstream media's landfill with previous underreported Obama scandals such as Solyndra and Fast and Furious.
Yesterday I read an interesting article in Newsweek about the connection between tornadoes and climate change. Newsweek's story explained how top climate scientists were concerned about several ominous and fundamental changes occurring in Earth's weather patterns. Evidence that Earth's climate was changing in the wrong direction, the article said, included a shorter growing season in England, higher average temperatures at the equator and an increase in tornadoes like the monster than killed at least 24 people in Tornado Alley this week.
Remember the 1996 movie, "A Time to Kill"? An adaptation of John Grisham's 1989 legal thriller, it stars Matthew McConaughey as a small-town lawyer in Mississippi who defends a black man who killed the two white racists who had raped his 10-year-old daughter. In his closing arguments McConaughey asks the jury to close their eyes and listen to the painful details of a story about the brutal rape of an innocent little girl. Then he ends his gripping story with a powerful request to the jury -- "Now imagine she's white."
History is one of our greatest teachers. It's just too bad so many of our young people think history started with the death of Princess Di or the birth of the iPhone. I was painfully reminded of America's historical illiteracy and the failure of our educational system last week while golfing with a few strangers in Burbank, Calif. One of the young men in my foursome was about 30 and ran a restaurant in Los Angeles.
I've never sought the spotlight. Though I'm coming out to the world, I intend to guard my privacy. I'm making this blanket statement in part to keep rumors and misunderstandings at bay. I'm not just a white, Catholic Republican. I'm not just a Reagan conservative. I'm a heterosexual. Like Jason Collins of the Washington Wizards, I just want everyone in America to know my sexual orientation.
