Roy Exum

Roy Exum is a lifelong writer who started out as a copy boy in the days of manual typewriters at the Chattanooga News-Free Press in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Some 36 years later, he was the newspaper's Executive Vice President, and served in that capacity until its sale to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

During his Free Press years, Roy became a well-known local columnist, whose Southern-style commentaries were less about policy and analysis and more about people — most of whom we would all like to have as neighbors. Many of his columns were reprinted in publications such as Reader's Digest.

Roy left the Free Press after its sale for greener pastures with a number of private sector ventures, but he never lost his love for telling stories.

After a ten-year hiatus from writing, he succumbed to the lure of "storytelling" once again — to the resounding applause of his local readers, one of whom is his lifelong friend, Mark Alexander.

Alexander convinced Roy to share his stories with Patriot Post readers, noting that Roy is filling a gap left by another great storyteller, Lewis Grizzard, and that his columns appear several times each week.

Roy has two children. His son Andrew, a former captain in an Army Ranger unit, is a Fellow with the Center for a New American Security in Washington. His daughter, Mary Cady Bolin, is a Christian counselor at a church in Nashville.
