Never Forget Joe Biden’s Afghanistan Disaster
His actions should paint an indelible picture of a president who was out of touch, out of his depth and, frankly, out of excuses.
In the final days of Joe Biden’s pathetic presidency — one that has been riddled with miscalculations, mistakes and outright catastrophes — his inner circle has been working overtime to preemptively defend his legacy, with no better example than Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, who has spent recent days lauding Biden’s foreign policy prowess.
Frankly, that’s the political equivalent of you going to your dentist for a routine cleaning and then waking in the waiting room to the receptionist explaining why your teeth are missing and your tongue has been replaced with salt water taffy … the plain flavor.
Oh, before handing you a bill.
In reality, Biden’s legacy will be one of failure, but with so many failures to choose from, it’s important that we don’t forget the most unforgivable. It wasn’t the economy, the border or even the explosion of war across the world. No, his legacy is summarized by the moment that should — but probably won’t — haunt Biden for the rest of time: his disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021.
This entirely unnecessary withdrawal brought us images we should never forget: of desperate Afghans clinging to the landing gear of U.S. aircraft or the women giving away their babies through barbed wire fences or the suicide bombing in the hellish chaos that claimed the lives of 13 brave American service members and hundreds of Afghan citizens at Abbey Gate.
And who is to blame? Joe Biden.
Because despite the well-worn reliance on blaming Donald Trump, Biden was behind every element of this abject failure. He chose the timeline. He ignored the advice of military commanders who warned of the consequences of a hasty retreat. He dismissed intelligence reports that predicted the rapid collapse of the Afghan government and the resurgence of the Taliban. And, most damning of all, he left behind Americans, Afghan allies — including countless Afghan interpreters, contractors and their families who risked everything to help U.S. forces — and billions of dollars in military equipment in the hands of one of the world’s most brutal regimes.
For a president whose brand is built on compassion and empathy and a respect of human dignity, this was the ultimate betrayal.
Biden promised that the withdrawal would not resemble the fall of Saigon. But in many ways, it was worse, damaging the United States’ reputation as a global leader and a nation its allies can rely upon, let alone emboldening adversaries like China and Russia, who saw it as proof of America’s declining influence and resolve.
Biden’s Afghanistan withdrawal is emblematic of his feckless leadership style: naivety blended with arrogance and sheer stupidity, reactive rather than proactive, more concerned with political optics than real-world outcomes, and utterly devoid of accountability. Even in the aftermath, as the bodies of the U.S. service members murdered during the Afghanistan withdrawal were returned to the United States, what was compassionate Joe Biden doing? He was checking his watch.
For a man who campaigned on restoring America’s soul and competence, his actions in Afghanistan should paint an indelible picture of a president who was out of touch, out of his depth and, frankly, out of excuses.
Like Biden’s entire presidency, the Afghanistan withdrawal was a disaster, and it’s a disaster he and his legacy must never be allowed to escape.
