America is a constitutional Republic and our rule of law is established in our Constitution. The document itself is a prescriptive and restrictive document for the United States, the federal government. In the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States, it prescribes the governing imperatives for the federal government: establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare (not provide welfare), and secure the blessings of Liberty. I would like to focus on one of those imperatives: ensure domestic tranquility.

It is quite easy to surmise that during the Biden administration, there was a willful and intentional agenda to upset our domestic tranquility. The ideological agenda of open borders has resulted in far too many Americans losing their lives, most recently 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman. And the Marxist leftist attacks and violence against federal law enforcement tasked with ensuring our domestic tranquility is even more egregious. It does not take an advanced degree to realize that the leftists in America are doing everything that they can to undermine our domestic tranquility, better described as our safety and security.

In his essay “The Law”, Frederic Bastiat is clear in articulating that the preeminent responsibility of government, according to the law, is to protect the life, liberty, and property of individual citizens. This is done by the effective implementation of law enforcement officers and officials, instead of each individual citizen doing so themselves. The great thing about America and our Constitution is that the Second Amendment still recognizes the responsibility of the individual. “A well-regulated militia (the people), being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Yes, we do have a government that has an imperative to ensure our domestic tranquility, but that does not relieve or eliminate the individual responsibility for safety and security.

But, what happens when leftists purposefully endeavor to undermine the government responsibility to ensure our domestic tranquility? We already know that the Marxist leftists are committed to disarming legal, law-abiding citizens. Just look at Virginia.

The whole Department of Homeland Security shutdown by the leftists is a violation of the federal government constitutional imperative to “ensure domestic tranquility.” The reality is that these leftists do not even attempt to hide the goal of what they seek. They are truly focused on “defunding” law enforcement, at every level. They feel it best to promote the general welfare of criminal illegal immigrants, heck, criminals period, over the security of individual citizens.

I have visited the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Brunswick, Georgia on several occasions. It is the central location for the training of all federal law enforcement officers. The facility, which is like a military Basic Training post, contains some of the most professional former law enforcement officers, many former military. One of the ancillary missions that FLETC has is to provide training to State, Local, and Tribal Division (SLTD) law enforcement agencies, fully funded by Congress at no cost to these agencies. Previous numbers evidence that this training — Use of force/Force options, Active shooter/Active threat, Tactical Medicine, Advanced Interviewing, Leadership courses for decision makers, and other instructor (train the trainer) courses — for SLTD agencies reaches approximately 20,000 state and local officers.

Unfortunately, leftists’ angst towards Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has resulted in the shutdown of DHS, has had a collateral effect in that some 130 of these planned classes for SLTD officers have been canceled, translating to nearly 3,100 men and women in law enforcement not receiving training. This type of disruption in the training of our SLTD law enforcement officers can have detrimental effects on the readiness of our LEOs to confront the many challenges they are facing, especially that of criminal illegal immigrants, along with domestic terrorism.

As you know, I was recently in the State of Maryland supporting local law enforcement, sheriffs, as part of our American Constitutional Rights Union (ACRU) Defender Initiative. Maryland Governor Wes Moore recently signed into law a bill that restricts local law enforcement cooperation with ICE. In his statement, Moore referred to ICE officers as “untrained,” yet it is his political party that is preventing state and local law enforcement officers from being trained. I can bet that Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, heck, most of these leftist governors, have never been to Brunswick, Georgia and visited the FLETC facility.

I have a novel idea.

When these elected officials make decisions, promote legislation, or take actions that violate our Constitution, they should be immediately canceled, just like these classes at the FLETC. It is time we held elected officials responsible for their unconstitutional actions. Then again, that would mean that “We the People” need to read, study, and understand the Constitution. As well, any elected official advocating for a government shutdown, resulting in Americans not being paid, should not be paid themselves. This whole concept of a political elite must end, as these rogue elected officials are placing our domestic tranquility, our safety and security at risk.

As a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, former Member of Congress, and Executive Director of the ACRU, I have and always will take my oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States seriously. And I implore my Veteran Brothers and Sisters to do the same and join our Committee to Support and Defend. It is past time that we end the lawlessness and unconstitutional actions of elected officials…that can only happen if we are engaged and involved.
