Take That, Founding Fathers!

In case you haven’t noticed, America is doing everything it can to not only trash the Constitution, but to eliminate from the national landscape some of the major players in the creation of the United States. For openers, Alexander Hamilton is on the verge of being replaced on the ten dollar bill, and the Democrats are about to quit calling their annual fund-raising soirees Jefferson-Jackson dinners. I’m not sure why Hamilton has fallen out of favor, but apparently the Democrats, who can’t win an election unless every black person in America turns out to vote a couple of times, have decided they can no longer pay homage to Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson because they owned slaves.

The irony is that the DNC today owns millions of them, but they are now referred to as welfare recipients. But, not to worry, the Democrats have any number of leftist icons in the wings, just waiting to have their names attached to these partisan galas. With a collection of notables that includes the likes of Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Orval Faubus, George and Henry Wallace, Jimmy Carter, Michael Dukakis, Robert Byrd, Huey Long, Lyndon Johnson, Theophilus Eugene" Bull" Connor , the Clintons and Barack Obama, I’m sure the pairing of any two of them would draw well-heeled liberals the way a cow pie attracts flies.

If the cops were as racist as those goons affiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement insist they are, wouldn’t the victims occasionally include doctors, lawyers, engineers, military officers, business owners, accountants and even, once in a while, a movie star or a professional athlete?

In my experience, racist societies and groups don’t make exceptions. Czar Nicholas had it in for all Jews, as did Hitler. In the bad old days, South Africa didn’t distinguish between good blacks and the other kind. In the Old South, they didn’t allow any blacks to eat at their lunch counters, not even those who refrained from slurping their soup. So how is it that the only blacks who seem to suffer at the hands of white cops are street thugs and drug dealers? It just strikes me that those who discriminate on the basis of race don’t tend to be that discerning.

Politics matter. Elections have consequences. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be a form of entertainment, especially when laughs are in such short supply in the movies and on TV. For instance, how can you not laugh when Hillary Clinton, attempting to explain how it was that classified documents passed through her unsecured email server, said, “According to the law, it is a government official who decides what is officially classified. I was that official.”

I believe the Ayatollah gave a similar explanation when asked how it was that he would be the one who decided if Iran was conducting unauthorized nuclear development.

A reader, Wesley Forgue, wrote, asking why it is that liberals feel that the U.S., the most successful country ever on the face of the earth, needs a complete do-over. Why, he wants to know, doesn’t someone like Bernie Sanders start with Nigeria or Venezuela and show us how he can improve its economy before he tackles ours?

The truth is if Bernie Sanders, who lives up to his initials every time he opens his yap, put into practice the socialist pap he’s been peddling his entire life, he would fall on his face. The reason socialism doesn’t work is because it can’t work, and it can’t work because it flies in the face of human nature. The truth is that most normal people are competitive. Most of us aspire to be, if not the best, at least better than most. We want to be richer, smarter, more successful, more loved, more respected. It doesn’t mean we can’t work with others for the common good, but it does mean we are realists who know that while not everybody will do his fair share of the work, the slackers will still demand their unfair share of the pie.

You don’t have to take my word for it. Just look around at Ferguson and Baltimore, Greece and Gaza.

If you want to see what liberals can do to Paradise, just take a gander at California. It wasn’t that long ago that we looked a lot like the Garden of Eden, but with more money, better schools, more agriculture and a climate to die for. Today, we are suffering our customary drought, farms are going fallow and the reason that Rick Perry has been able to brag about all the jobs in Texas is because high taxes and a ton of absurd regulations drove employers out of California.

Wouldn’t you think that by this time a state that is half desert with 40 million people would have been building dams and desalination plants as fast as they could be erected? Not in California. Instead, Jerry Brown and his trained fleas in Sacramento concern themselves with the plight of the delta smelt, the spotted owl and the rich Frisco environmentalist, who, truth be told, is the oddest bird of all.

One of my favorite modern writers is Alexander McCall Smith. In “Sunshine on Scotland Street,” one of his characters writes a hymn that goes “God’s never heard of Belgium/But loves it just the same/ For God is kind and doesn’t mind/ He’s not impressed with fame.”

And why would He be? After all, He’s more famous than anyone. But, then, why are we, who are allegedly created in His image, so taken with those of little or no accomplishment, people like the Kardashians, the Duggars and the Clintons?

I suspect it’s for the same reason that, starting in the 1960s, people stopped being impressed with great singers. Suddenly, we were awash with folk singing Communists, rock stars and hillbillies. It was because it became so easy for adenoidal teenagers to think they could be that person. It was easy for them to say to themselves “I can sing as well as that” because they could. Possessing less talent than a chimpanzee, they could easily envision themselves on stage, the musical idol of millions. And once we descended to the level of rap and hip-hop, even the chimps began to consider musical careers.

That was bad enough. But, soon, the same mind set leaked over into the world of politics, making it inevitable that young brats like Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham and Barack Obama, would look at people like Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern, and say to themselves: “I can do that, and it sure beats working for a living.”

And from their graves, the likes of Jefferson, Madison, Adams and Washington, gave a collective groan, and Benjamin Franklin was heard to say: “For this, I put up with Philadelphia in July?!”

Speaking of great men, Winston Churchill greeted Neville Chamberlain upon his return from Munich with “You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor and you will have war.”

Too bad he wasn’t around to welcome John Kerry back from Vienna.
