March Against the Second Amendment
The anti-Second Amendment protest, the March For Our Lives, took place Saturday. Organizers predicted between 500,000 and 800,000 people would attend. They thought it could even make history with a record-setting size. And they had every reason to expect a big turnout.
The anti-Second Amendment protest, the March for Our Lives, took place Saturday. Organizers predicted between 500,000 and 800,000 people would attend. They thought it could even make history with a record-setting size. And they had every reason to expect a big turnout.
The protest had huge support from the Left. Many Hollywood celebrities attended, and the liberal media spent the entire weekend promoting it almost nonstop. Even the NFL was onboard. But in the end, the protest didn’t match the hype.
The District of Columbia no longer makes official estimates of crowd sizes. But a company that uses aerial footage to estimate crowds determined that the likely turnout of the “student-led march” was between 170,000 and 200,000 people.
I see 170,000 leftists every day of my life when I go into Washington, DC. The city voted 91% for Hillary Clinton. New York City is just a few hours away. My point is that this was not an impressive crowd.
It sounds comparable to the annual March for Life event, which takes place every year in January and without 24/7 media promotion.
I have no doubt that some very well-meaning high school students showed up for this march. But there is a reason we don’t let 13- and 14-year-olds vote.
Many of these students are being exploited by the self-appointed “leaders” of this youth movement, who clearly have a left-wing agenda to gut the Second Amendment. There were terrible signs in the crowd attacking Sen. Marco Rubio and the NRA, which is an association defending our constitutional rights.
What was striking to me is that there were no signs attacking the individuals responsible for the dereliction of duty that led to the Parkland shooting.
Where were the demands for Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel to resign after his department ignored dozens of calls?
Why were there no calls for reform at the FBI after it ignored repeated warnings?
Why were there no calls for the one commonsense idea that has broad support — arming more guards at schools?
By the way, lots of students do not agree with the march’s left-wing agenda, but most of Big Media are pretending they don’t exist. One pro-Second Amendment student, Kyle Kashuv, finally got a major interview on “Face the Nation” Sunday.
And just consider the juxtaposition between Kashuv and David Hogg, the foul-mouthed, anti-gun, communist-saluting darling of the Left.
Build That Wall?
It was clear from his Friday press conference that President Trump understands many of his supporters are angry about that spending bill he signed last week. The president seemingly acknowledged that anger again in a tweet Sunday.
Trump hinted that he may use funds from the Army Corps of Engineers to build more of the wall than was specifically authorized by the spending bill. Here’s what the president wrote:
Because of the $700 & $716 Billion Dollars gotten to rebuild our Military, many jobs are created and our Military is again rich. Building a great Border Wall, with drugs (poison) and enemy combatants pouring into our Country, is all about National Defense. Build WALL through M!
Stay tuned.
Trump Gets Tough
The White House announced yesterday that it is expelling 60 Russian diplomats from the country and closing the Russian consulate in Seattle. The move is being taken in support of our ally Great Britain, which claims it has solid evidence that Russia is behind the assassination of dissidents in the United Kingdom.
A senior administration official told reporters:
This was a reckless attempt by the government to murder a British citizen and his daughter on British soil with a military-grave nerve agent. It cannot go unanswered… The Russian government has shown malicious contempt for the sovereignty and security of countries worldwide… To the Russian government we say: “When you attack our friends you will face serious consequences.”
It will be interesting to see how the media responds to the president’s tough action. Will the Left applaud Trump? Not likely. I’m sure the Left will figure out some way to blame Trump for being “provocative” and risking war with Russia.
Barack Obama talked big, but he did virtually nothing to confront Vladimir Putin’s aggression. Trump has tried to maintain an open line, but he has in fact been very tough against Russia.
Trump has pushed our European allies to boost their defense spending. Putin doesn’t want that.
Trump has massively increased U.S. defense spending. Putin doesn’t want that either.
Trump has massively expanded U.S. energy production. Putin can’t afford that.
Other Headlines
The latest Fox News poll had good news for the GOP. The generic ballot for the November congressional elections had Democrats leading by only five points. That’s a big improvement from the 15-point deficit the GOP faced in October. But there’s a big caveat: The poll was conducted before President Trump signed the $1.3 trillion spending bill.
You know we are living in strange times when the former FBI deputy director writes an opinion piece in The Washington Post in which he essentially admits to misleading federal investigators.
Speaking of opinion pieces, there was a big one last week that got very little attention. Cardinal Timothy Dolan wrote in Friday’s Wall Street Journal that Democrats, who once courted Catholic voters, have now “slammed the door” on men and women of faith who believe in religious liberty and the sanctity of life.
