Congress Must Quit Wasting Time and Get to Work Fixing Our Problems
The only people who seem not to notice the crisis we have in America with people who sneak across our borders, who falsely claim asylum, or who fake family status with a rented, borrowed, or kidnapped child are the people who are responsible for addressing the problem: congressional Democrats.
The only people who seem not to notice the crisis we have in America with people who sneak across our borders, who falsely claim asylum, or who fake family status with a rented, borrowed, or kidnapped child are the people who are responsible for addressing the problem: congressional Democrats.
Worse than their gross failure to address this very serious problem is their glaring hypocrisy on the issue of illegal immigration. The Hypocrites Hall of Fame reads like a list of prominent Democrats.
In 2006, Senate Democrats voted for a fence along the southern border. Here is what some of them had to say about the border issue then.
Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who is now Senate minority Leader, voted in favor of the Secure Fence Act and elaborated on his pro-border security stance a few years later in a speech at the Georgetown University Law Center. He said calling illegal aliens “undocumented” was unacceptable. “Illegal immigration is wrong, plain and simple,” he said, “When we use phrases like ‘undocumented workers,’ we convey a message to the American people that their government is not serious about combating illegal immigration, which the American people overwhelmingly oppose.”
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) commented on the Secure Fence Act, “Democrats are solidly behind controlling the border, and we support the border fence.”
In 2014, then-Vice President Joe Biden said, “We [President Obama and I] felt so strongly, from the day we took office, for the need for immigration reform.” Playing the role of an illegal, Biden said, “‘I got a good idea. Let’s gather up everything we have, sell it, give it to some coyotes to take us to a country that doesn’t want us, drop us off in God knows where. We don’t [know] anybody. We leave everything that’s familiar to us. Let’s go. Isn’t that going to be a great idea? These are horrible decisions these people are making.”
These and other Democrats have gone through quite a spectacular evolution to now defend the indefensible by taking the side of illegal aliens who are here or are on their way here.
Among those seeking the Democrat nomination for president, Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) propose abolishing ICE altogether. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) in 2013 called for an end to deportations of illegal immigrants who have not committed felonies. “Our view of the law is that … if somebody is here without sufficient documentation, that is not reason for deportation,” she declared.
It gets worse. “The truth is, immigrants seeking refuge in our country … shouldn’t be a criminal-justice issue,” San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro said. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra shares this position.
In his 2019 inaugural address, California Gov. Gavin Newsom promised to make the entire state of California a “sanctuary to all who seek it” and to make illegal immigrants eligible for Medi-Cal, California’s version of Medicaid, until age 26. Some sanctuary cities are even allowing illegal immigrants to vote in local elections.
The country has many problems needing attention, and securing the border and stopping illegal immigration are among them. The borders are not secure. We need walls and more technology and more people on the border.
This is a serious crisis, and one that can fairly easily be fixed — if the House of Representatives will do its job.
Instead, the House has become a one-trick pony that is obsessed with doing anything and everything possible to interfere with President Donald Trump’s efforts to do his job and/or to remove him from office.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) tells us, “The total number of people apprehended entering illegally across the southern border in March was 103,492. That figure represents a 105 percent increase from March 2018, and an astounding 516 percent jump over apprehensions for March 2017.”
Many of these illegal aliens are not the honest folk seeking a better life that some of these congressional Democrats would have you believe. Some are gang members, drug traffickers, child traffickers, rapists, and murderers. Thousands of Americans have been raped, killed, or assaulted by them.
Insufficient border-security measures are not the only problem, of course. The “catch and release” plan, where illegals claiming asylum — most of which are fraudulent claims — are captured, released into the country, and told to return at a date far in the future for a hearing on their claim, is just foolish.
Other features of the system are equally foolish and need to be fixed. FAIR reports that between October and March, the apprehension of alleged “family units” along the southern border more than doubled from 23,116 to 53,077.
Many other illegals are people who came here legally and overstayed their visas. They are as guilty as those who sneak into the country.
These problems could be ended with legislative action to increase border security and to change some of the truly dumb rules that are in effect. But that requires the Democrat-led House to put the nation’s security above the personal and political interests of members of the majority.
They need to put the one-trick pony in its stall and get to work.
