Obama/Putin: No Contest!
The buzz around Washington, D.C., is that we are entering a new cold war with Russia. My response: Don't worry! Be happy! There is no new cold war. To have a cold war, two sides must realize they have conflicting interests and each must want their interests to prevail and be willing to compete. As of now, Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, understands that. But he has no opposition in an America under our lame President Barack Obama. A cold war would actually be an improvement over what we have now, which is a global American retreat in the face of Russian and Iranian aggression.

If it had the wit, the Obama administration would be not angered, but appropriately humiliated. President Obama has, once again, been totally outmaneuvered by Vladimir Putin. Two days earlier at the United Nations, Obama had welcomed the return, in force, of the Russian military to the Middle East — for the first time in decades — in order to help fight the Islamic State. The ruse was transparent from the beginning. Russia is not in Syria to fight the Islamic State. The Kremlin was sending fighter planes, air-to-air missiles and SA-22 anti-aircraft batteries. Against an Islamic State that has no air force, no planes, no helicopters?

If the humiliation of the Obama administration continues at this rate, by this time next week you should expect to see Secretary of State John Kerry on all fours at the United Nations, getting paddled by the Russian foreign minister and shouting, "Thank you, comrade! May I have another?" On Monday, President Obama and Vladimir Putin had a meeting at the United Nations. All Putin wanted from it was a photo of the two men huddling together. The Russian president needed to show his people that he's still a major player on the world stage, a big man driving events. Obama, who spent much of the last year trying to isolate the butcher of Ukraine, gave Putin exactly what he wanted. In wall-to-wall coverage, Russian media celebrated the big man's diplomatic triumph and his geo-strategic genius.

The U.S. Shouldn't Feel Migrant Guilt
The U.S. has joined the global bidding on Syrian refugees. At first it said it would take 10,000 Syrians. Now it says it will increase the annual U.S. overall refugee intake from 70,000 to 100,000 during the next three years to help deal with the migrant wave deluging Europe. The Obama administration's attitude used to be that Syria is a faraway country of which we know nothing, and it stood by while Syria descended into mayhem and madness. It turns out that Syria is not so far away that some of its nearly biblical exodus — half of the country's population is displaced — won't touch our shores. You can only have pity for people who have seen their country destroyed. Yet Syrians are only part of the European migration crisis. It should be understood, at the highest level of abstraction, as people fleeing some of the poorest, worst-governed, most strife-torn places in the world for some of the richest, best-governed and peaceful ones.
Syria Just One of Obama's Foreign-Policy Failures
The news that the Obama administration has spent $500 million to put "four or five" fighters on the ground in Syria adds an almost comic irony to what is ultimately a tragic farce. In the 1980s, the symbol of Republican incompetence and mismanagement was the $600 toilet seat. Left out of the media coverage was the fact that the toilet seat was for a special kind of anti-submarine aircraft that had been out of production and needed special retrofitting. But forget all that. How does that compare to spending $100 million per non-bionic human soldier?

Putting an End to the 'Refugee Crisis'
Most of the Syrians we see on the nightly news and on newspaper front pages are not fleeing war-torn Syria. The 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi (whose real name is Alan Shenu) whose heartrending death was broadcast around the world was not fleeing Syria. He'd lived his whole short life in Turkey, where his parents had been living in safety. The Shenu family, like so many of these refugees, left Turkey on a smugglers' boat, ultimately trying to reach Canada in pursuit of better economic prospects and a better life. This distinction is often lost in the coverage of the European "refugee crisis" that is in many respects a migrant crisis. According to the law, never mind morality, we treat refugees differently. Refugees flee for their lives. Migrants make choices.
