The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) made its own bed by blindly adhering to radical social justice causes. Predictably, then, the social justice warriors' recent stupid haranguing of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham — who doesn't believe that gender-confused men should participate in women’s sports — has sparked a wave of backlash.
Cunningham is brave for publicly declaring that women and little girls deserve their own sports leagues without having to accommodate the perversions of a mentally ill man. Thankfully, she is not fighting this battle alone — plenty of people are likewise standing for sports integrity.
On the flip side, Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton decided to chew out two high school girls who agreed with Cunningham.
Hilariously, former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White both announced that they were joining next year's WNBA draft. Furthermore, sports commentator Clay Travis offered to put up millions of his own money to create a transgender-only WNBA team.
The WNBA is being forced to decide whether to put its money where its mouth is. Will league officials define a woman as an adult human female with XX chromosomes, or will they define a woman as a gender that anyone can appropriate?
Freedom attended Sunday night's game between the Fever and the Chicago Sky. It was an intense game, and Freedom threw his hands in the air to celebrate a three-point basket made by Cunningham. Not too long after, during a timeout, Sky guard Natasha Cloud yelled vulgar things at him. For context, Freedom was wearing a black T-shirt with the dictionary definition of “woman” on it.
“She’s not going to sleep with you,” Cloud taunted, to which Freedom replied, “I am not trying to sleep with her. I’m just here to protect women and support her.” Cloud kept charging the stands and hurling insults while her teammates tried to hold her back. Freedom stood up with his hands outstretched, repeating that he was only there to stand up for women’s sports. Cloud, who instigated the fight, was permitted to continue her game. Freedom was escorted out of the arena.
As Freedom recounted later, “She started to actually cuss, and I was very shocked. There were a lot of kids, and there were a lot of teenagers at that game, and I just cannot believe that she was just cussing and using those F-bombs in front of all these kids.”
Attacking a fan in such a crude and vulgar way is punishable by the WNBA’s own rules. Nevertheless, Cloud was not fined or suspended.
By the way, the security guards did not give Freedom a reason for his removal.
The culmination of this episode seems to be that Freedom gave the WNBA reason to disallow him from participating in the 2027 draft. According to ESPN, Freedom and White have been deemed ineligible — which is disputed. Freedom says that the WNBA has yet to formally disqualify him, but if that happens, his next step would be to ask: On what grounds? If it’s because he is a man and not a woman, then he wins the argument, at which point the WNBA can (but probably won't) stop being absurd.
Freedom has also been banned from the Wintrust Arena in Chicago because his actions were ostensibly “provocative.”
Freedom — and by extension White — is putting his name and reputation on the line to prove just how ridiculous this ideology is. When all the pro-transgenderism supporters have is rage — when all they do is act like fools and even cuss at children — do they have a virtuous leg to stand on? No. They are simply grandstanding and hoping for no consequences.
Sidebar: The closest the WNBA has actually gotten to having a gender-confused member on a team is the Toronto Tempo’s new mascot — a nonbinary turtle who is apparently a Taurus and goes by "she/they." In case you needed another reason never to take your children to a WNBA game, grooming children with nonbinary mascots is a pretty good one.
The WNBA is happy to virtue signal in favor of gender pathology, yet stops short of employing it. Why? Because the league's elite women players would look like amateurs against men. For example, male basketball players dunk the ball frequently — thousands of times in the regular season. In the entire history of the WNBA, there have been only 39 dunks.
Will this finally bring the WNBA brass to their senses and compel them to define what a woman is, or will they stick to their guns and go back to being ignored? This is a serious consideration: If the perpetually and harshly fouled Caitlin Clark leaves to do something else, the WNBA will fall back into decay. Other future talents won’t want to play either after the way the league has treated Clark. Maybe then it will be forced to hire gender-confused men just for the controversy and viewership.
The league hasn't woken up so far, and I’m not holding my breath.
