When Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito answered a question about polarization from a leftist activist in disguise, he stated what was perfectly obvious to anyone who’s halfway paying attention.

“One side or the other is going to win,” he said. “There can be a way of working — a way of living together peacefully, but it’s difficult … because there are differences on fundamental things that really can’t be compromised. They really can’t be compromised. So it’s not like you are going to split the difference.”

There are deep, fundamental, and irreconcilable differences between today’s conservatives and leftists.

According to Pew Research, “Trump supporters (59%) are much more likely than Biden supporters (19%) to say that it is better if people prioritize marriage and children.”

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The Left and the Right have drifted further and further apart on other issues as well.

Take abortion. “About nine-in-ten Biden supporters (88%) say abortion should be legal in most (46%) or all (42%) cases,” according to Pew. “Just 11% of Biden supporters say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases. Conversely, about six-in-ten Trump supporters (61%) say abortion should be illegal in all (11%) or most (50%) cases. A significant minority of Trump supporters say abortion should be legal in most or all cases (38%).”

On the issue of transgenderism, “Nine-in-ten Trump supporters and about four-in-ten Biden supporters (39%) say sex at birth determines if someone is a man or a woman.” This issue is so divergent that we can’t even agree on what a woman is anymore.

On immigration, Trump voters are much more inclined to deport illegals and limit immigration. “Roughly six-in-ten Trump supporters (63%) say there should be a national effort to deport undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. Just 11% of Biden supporters hold this view.”

There is very little that conservatives and leftists agree on, and it all boils down to first principles.

Conservatives tend to view the U.S. as the greatest country in the world and want to keep it that way. They want to create a society that thrives by promoting cultural norms like marriage and family, enforcing the Rule of Law, and protecting the American people.

Leftists are focused on challenging and changing all societal norms by destroying marriage and family, the Rule of Law, and keeping power by importing future voters (i.e., illegal immigrants).

It all stems back to whether one adheres to Judeo-Christian values or moral relativism. In other words, do you believe in a higher authority? Or does the individual represent the highest authority? The battle for the country’s soul has been decades in the making. It’s going to take more than a single president to help bring about unity.
