Snow White and the Seven Woklings
Disney’s latest film is a colossal disaster by nearly every measure, as the company has lost the ability to tell good stories.
Back in 1937, Walt Disney, seeking to save his fledgling animation company, effectively went all in on a groundbreaking idea and cinematic masterpiece that launched Disney into worldwide fame. That film was “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”
Disney spent what was at the time a massive sum — $1.5 million. He employed more than 700 artists who produced over two million paintings for the film.
When it was released in 1938, the film was an immediate success, earning $8 million globally and becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. For a brief time, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was the highest-grossing film of all time, and adjusting for inflation, it remains the highest-grossing animated film of all time, tallying over $2.2 billion in box-office sales thanks to subsequent re-releases.
Along with the financial success came great artistic acclaim. “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” won an Academy Award for Best Musical Score in 1938, and Disney himself won an honorary Oscar the following year for production.
In 1989, the Library of Congress selected “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” as one of its first 25 films deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” enough to be preserved in the National Film Registry. The American Film Institute ranks the film within its top 100 American films of all time, and in 2008, it ranked the movie as the greatest American animation film of all time.
In other words, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is to American film history and legacy what the moon landing is to NASA or the Model T is to the American automotive industry. In short, Disney would not be what it is today without “Snow White.”
Thus, when Disney announced in 2019 that it would be making a live-action version of the beloved classic, as it had been doing to some of its other animated films, there was excitement but also trepidation. Could Disney do justice to the film that saved the company and turned it into the media powerhouse it is to this day?
Well, since that original announcement, it has become glaringly obvious that Woke Disney is no Walt Disney.
Indeed, from the curious casting choice of Rachel Zegler as Snow White to leaked images of a cast of a ragtag group of seven Diverse Individuals, only one of whom is a dwarf, to Zegler’s comments disparaging the original film and its character of Prince Charming as a “creepy” stalker to her Palestinian activism that clashed with Israeli “Evil Queen” actress Gal Gadot, it was clear that this new version of the film had strayed far away from the Magic Kingdom.
So swift was the negative blowback that Disney delayed its originally planned release date by a year, presumably to “fix” the film with reshoots.
Last week, Disney’s new film, titled simply “Snow White,” arrived, and as many had worried and predicted, it’s a colossal mess. In sum, it turns the narrative of a young woman helping newfound friends and finding true love into one of a girl boss shaping up the hopelessly worthless men in her life before saving herself by the sheer awesomeness of her presence. Meanwhile, even the choreography and music are subpar, and some of the reshoots are so disjointed as to be obvious.
That it’s a poor product isn’t just the opinion of those on the political Right. Across the board, critics and viewers alike are panning this film as being a dumpster fire. IMDb currently gives Snow White a 1.7 out of 10 rating. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a rating of 42%.
During the opening weekend, the film grossed $43 million at the box office domestically, and the total global gross is just $86 million. “#1 MOVIE IN THE WORLD!” posted Zegler with a predictable lack of self-awareness.
Given that Disney spent $250 million just to make the movie, never mind promotion expenses, those dismal revenue numbers mean it will take an awful lot more visits from young princes and princesses for the film to even break even.
In short, “Snow White” is an utter disaster— a disaster the brass at Disney would like to put into the rearview mirror as fast as possible. Far from being a deserving tribute to the film that saved and made Disney, “Snow White” is an example of what happens when the original story is despised by those who, high on their self-righteous hubris, reject the mores and insights of past generations and believe they can tell a better story than the original.
The result is a disjointed mess of a film wherein a socialist, feminist, woke ideology is heralded as true and good, only to collapse under its own self-contradictory, narrow-minded worldview.
In one sense, this “Snow White” debacle is a microcosm of the problem with leftists and their antagonistic views of the West. They hate America’s history and its values, and in endeavoring to transform the country, they end up producing nothing but pie-in-the-sky activism that produces only dysfunction and cultural decay, resulting in a society teetering on an identity collapse.
