FDA Expands Generic Abortion Pills, Endangering Many Lives

The government needs to revoke the approval of mifepristone. In the meantime, pro-life advocates are joining the growing outcry against this step backwards in the fight for life.

President Donald Trump’s Food and Drug Administration just approved another generic version of the abortion pill mifepristone after green-lighting the first generic version in 2019. Mifepristone is being widely distributed to women across the nation. It’s obviously fatal for preborn babies, but it’s also dangerous for the mothers who ingest it. Expanding access to it endangers many lives and represents an unfortunate step backwards in the fight for life.

Those of us who champion the precious lives of preborn children were hopeful after Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary promised recently that they would investigate the drug after new studies found the FDA had grossly overstated its safety. In fact, mothers who ingest the abortifacient are 22 times more likely to develop a serious side effect than the FDA originally claimed. Yet the FDA is now allowing a cheaper alternative to go into production. It’s both counterintuitive and wicked.

To his credit, President Trump was instrumental in the overturning of Roe v. Wade thanks to his nominating and the Senate Republicans confirming more conservative-minded Supreme Court justices during his first term — but he is not exactly a pro-life absolutist. While he espouses a more moderate position than, say, Kamala Harris, whose party advocates abortion on demand, Trump wants the states to decide the issue.

Moreover, despite Kennedy claiming to be a Catholic (abortion is against the doctrines of his faith), he is pro-choice politically. “Abortion is a tragedy,” he said before dropping out of the 2024 presidential race, “but I don’t trust the government to make these decisions for Americans. I’m for choice and medical freedom. We need to trust mothers to make the best decisions. We also need to give full support to mothers who want to bring babies to term.”

Those fighting for the sanctity of life on the front lines had some strong objections.

“This is shocking,” said Senator Josh Hawley. “FDA has just approved ANOTHER chemical abortion drug, when the evidence shows chemical abortion drugs are dangerous and even deadly for the mother. And of course 100% lethal to the child.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence called for Kennedy’s removal: “The Trump Administration’s approval of a generic chemical abortion drug is a complete betrayal of the pro-life movement that elected President Trump. Earlier this year, I opposed RFK’s nomination because he was unfit for the role and particularly over the concern that he would expand access to abortion, as he has done today. President Trump must immediately reverse this decision. RFK must resign and give President Trump the opportunity to appoint a new Secretary of HHS who will protect the sanctity of life. The fight for life continues.”

Lila Rose, pro-life activist and founder of Live Action, wrote: “UNACCEPTABLE: The FDA just approved another generic of the abortion pill mifepristone. This drug starves babies and harms mothers! The FDA just said it would do a new serious safety study — so why approve another generic now? @RobertKennedyJr must reverse this decision!”

To be fair, this generic drug, which is being produced by Evita Solutions, was only approved because the FDA is merely saying that it’s the same product as mifepristone, just a different brand. Unfortunately for us, mifepristone is already approved. As Kennedy explained:

The Biden administration removed mifepristone’s in-person dispensing rule without studying the safety risks. We are filling that gap. Last month, I joined [Marty Makary] in writing to state attorneys general, pledging to review all the evidence — including real-world outcomes — on the safety of this drug. Recent studies already point to serious risks when mifepristone is used without proper medical oversight. [The FDA] only approved a second generic mifepristone tablet because federal law requires approval when an application proves the generic is identical to the brand-name drug.

In other words, his hands were tied to some extent because of federal law.

Bottom line: The FDA needs to revoke the approval of mifepristone.
