More Fallout From Maine ICE Shooting
The Leftmedia demonizes immigration enforcement officers, as if they are the problem rather than those flaunting the law and resisting arrest.
The ongoing demonization of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement by the Left, with the support of the Leftmedia, will cost lives.
Two more people were killed in recent incidents involving ICE agents, one in Texas and another in Maine, and the reaction of much of the mainstream media has been the same. The narrative is one of inferring guilt upon ICE and more broadly the Trump administration for daring to enforce the nation’s immigration laws, rather than questioning why people would find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
Colombian national Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero was killed during a traffic incident with ICE agents in Maine. To portray ICE as being in the wrong, the media reported that Guerrero was simply minding his own business when he was gunned down by a rogue agent. Available video footage of the incident is inconclusive as to when the young man was shot and killed.
Furthermore, Guerrero’s legal status is unclear due to the Biden administration’s de facto open border and Maine’s declared sanctuary status.
According to a Department of Homeland Security official, “Guerrero illegally entered the United States on September 1, 2023, via the southern border and was released into the country under the Biden Administration. He was granted work authorization in May 2025. To be clear, work authorization does NOT confer legal status in the United States.”
As our own Emmy Griffin wrote, “Guerrero, who was permitted to work in the U.S., fled a residence that ICE was staking out, although the officers were looking for a different illegal for whom they had a warrant and deportation order. Thinking this might be their man, the officers gave chase.”
As for the ICE officer responsible for shooting Guerrero, The Washington Post painted a negative picture of a troubled past and spun this into an assertion that the Trump administration’s vetting process for hiring some 10,000 new immigration enforcement officers is suspect.
Furthermore, The New York Times wove a cover-up narrative by reporting, “Federal Agents Were Told F.B.I. Will No Longer Investigate ICE Confrontations.” The Trump administration denies such actions.
Once again, the assumption is that ICE and DHS are covering up wrongdoing by supposedly shooing the FBI away from investigating any ICE officer-related shooting. This narrative, of course, further demonizes immigration enforcement, as if they want to descend upon innocent people simply going about their business.
The truth is, of course, far less conspiracy-theory fodder and far more understandable. People who are willing to break the law to enter the U.S. and remain here are naturally much more likely to resist and flee law enforcement.
This reality does not justify the killing of illegal aliens or those who protest immigration enforcement. It also does not mean that there are no bad apples among ICE agents. Investigations must be conducted into any and all ICE-involved shootings. DHS has its own internal investigative division, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which investigates transnational crimes and violations of America’s customs and immigration laws. It’s not surprising that DHS would be involved in investigating any instances involving ICE agents and enforcement activities.
Enforcement of our immigration laws should matter to every single American. The notion that people who are here illegally should get a pass is an example of inequity and injustice.
Americans should support ICE as it apprehends and removes individuals who don’t have a legal right to reside here. Citizenship matters. Those protesting ICE enforcement are making a mockery of citizenship and more broadly of the U.S. itself. Sadly, it has cost lives.
Indeed, Guerrero would likely still be alive today if the Biden administration had done its job and enforced America’s immigration laws.
