July jobs numbers drop
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released its report on July’s jobs numbers, which unexpectedly showed a loss of 23,000 jobs, falling well below the anticipated 83,000 jobs added. Interestingly, the headline unemployment rate dropped slightly to 4.1% and the overall labor force participation rate dropped to 61.4%, the lowest in five years. Leading the job losses was the local government education sector, posting a 50,000 decline; this was followed by the retail sector with 19,000 jobs lost. The healthcare industry added 22,000 jobs, coming in below the 12-month average of 36,000. Meanwhile, average hourly wages rose just two cents, with the yearly hourly wage average growth now at 3.2%, not meeting the forecasted 3.5%. This certainly makes the Great Burrito Debate of 2026 more interesting.

TN primary results
Tennessee’s contested gubernatorial primary race ended predictably with Senator Marsha Blackburn’s victory over challengers Congressman John Rose and State Representative Monty Fritts. Blackburn is expected to cruise to victory over Democrat Shelby County Public Defender Jerri Green in November. Downballot, despite an endorsement from President Donald Trump, outspoken Republican Congressman Andy Ogles lost his primary to former Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher in a district that was heavily redrawn. Democrat firebrand Justin Pearson, who has made waves in the State House of Representatives in recent years, won his party’s nomination for the newly redrawn 9th District and will face Republican Brent Taylor. In close general races in East Tennessee urban centers, Republican Betsy Henderson won her bid to replace Glenn Jacobs as Knox County mayor, and Republican Weston Wamp was reelected as Hamilton County mayor.

McConnell out of the hospital
Mitch McConnell is alive and well enough to be discharged from the hospital. The longtime senator was believed by many to be on his deathbed after suffering a fall, amplified by the lack of clarity from his office. His absence from the Senate has been consequential, as Republican margins have been uncomfortably thin over the past several weeks. While McConnell is out of the hospital, it remains unclear whether he will return to the Senate anytime soon. “On the advice of my doctors,” he said, “I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business.”

Blanche faces razor-thin margins in Senate vote
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche already faced an uphill battle to win Senate confirmation, and now the opposition has increased. Lisa Murkowski is holding out, citing concerns about the “politicization” of the Justice Department despite “constructive meetings” with Blanche. Susan Collins is joining Murkowski, and with Mitch McConnell out due to illness, Blanche’s nomination hangs on a thread. Bill Cassidy is the last undecided senator who could tip the balance one way or the other, but he recently lost his reelection bid to a Trump-backed candidate. Another major issue is the “anti-weaponization fund” that Blanche promised John Cornyn and Thom Tillis would be dead if he is confirmed, but Murkowski is skeptical of that. If the Senate does not confirm Blanche, he will continue to serve as acting attorney general at the DOJ.

Trump sells early access to Truth Social posts
Starting Saturday, Trump Media & Technology Group has announced that investors will have early access to what President Trump and other high-profile users post on Truth Social. Customers have already started signing up for $100,000 a month. Trump uses Truth Social to post announcements about his administration, new tariffs, and foreign policy decisions, and early access to that information would give traders and investors a head start in the stock market, where even a few seconds’ advantage could mean millions of dollars. Since Trump is the largest shareholder in his media company, each customer grows his family’s wealth. Democrats are demanding an intervention, as the 2012 Stock Act prohibits Congress and the president from trading stocks using privileged information.

Court orders Meta to pay nearly $1B in New Mexico child safety case
New Mexico Judge Bryan Biedscheid has ordered Meta Platforms, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, to pay $942 million in damages and penalties for failing to uphold child safety standards. The judgment followed a lawsuit accusing the company of allowing minors to see explicit content, causing physical and mental harm. The verdict requires Meta to create a $567 million abatement fund as well as add safety features that would better shield children and teens against mental health issues. Biedscheid called the abatement fund “necessary, due to the wide-ranging impacts of the harm and the complex nature of the remedy.” Meta plans to appeal the case, but it’s fair to say Meta will have to do much better if it wants to show the world that its platforms can protect the eyes and minds of the innocent.

Anti-MAGA slapper getting deported
An immigration judge recently ordered the deportation of illegal immigrant Kaitlyn Tracey after her arrest for slapping an American teen wearing pro-Trump clothing. Tracey was a Canadian who entered the U.S. on a temporary visa in 2024 and had stayed within American borders ever since. While she successfully hid for nearly two years, she evidently thought it was a good idea to record herself physically assaulting a minor on a public New Jersey boardwalk because the clothing the teenager was wearing had political messaging that was triggering for her. This current exhibition of “criminal refuses to have a competent thought” is ending with Tracey’s deportation, and she will likely get to compare what jail is like in Canada as opposed to in America.

Mamdani booed off stage at pro-cop event
About 3,500 residents and families attended the New York Police Department’s 43rd Patrol Borough National Night Out Against Crime event on Staten Island. When Mayor Zohran Mamdani attempted to speak, the crowd booed him off the stage. Mamdani made his way to the stage despite the jeering, but after less than a minute, the boos drowned him out, and he was forced to cut his speech short. The hue and cry continued even as organizers tried to regain control of the event. Many people have criticized Mamdani over his views on and treatment of the police. Consistent with the socialist agenda to defund the police, as mayor, he has cut police funding and canceled 5,000 new NYPD hires.

Cutting Head Start
The Trump administration is trying to curb excessive Head Start regulations. Currently, the nearly 100 pages of regulations cover topics from child-to-teacher ratios to health rules, including a mandate for students to brush their teeth at school; the new proposal would result in only a dozen pages of regulations. Some new regulations require better food standards, including “nutrient-dense, whole foods,” and give students 30 minutes of physical activity per 3.5 hours of classroom time. Assistant HHS Secretary Alex Adams said, “We built this rule around trusting local leaders to make the decisions that are best for their local communities.” The new standards are expected to boost falling Head Start enrollment, which currently rests around 700,000, by as many as 268,000 children. Democrats decry deregulation as an attempt to dismantle Head Start entirely, which some conservative think tanks have proposed.

Majority of Americans have negative view of socialism
What’s good about socialism? Well, according to recent polling from Gallup, nearly half of Americans say nothing. The newly released survey found that 39% of Americans expressed a positive view of socialism, while the negative views ranged from economic inefficiency to government overreach to reduced freedom and opportunities. Indeed, for those who did view socialism positively, 26% pointed to its provision of a social safety net, and 23% cited its promotion of equity and wealth redistribution. Meanwhile, when presented with three economic systems of capitalism, socialism, and free enterprise, the poll found that the latter was favored by 81%, followed by capitalism at 54% and socialism at 39%. Generationally, those 18 to 34 years old viewed socialism less negatively than older generations. Unsurprisingly, Republicans were far more negative on socialism than Democrats.
