Bait and Switch

We’re seeing a lot of bait and switch in politics because most people in America have short attention spans. The church needs to stand up to the insanity taking place.

It happens! There’s a big sale on something we really wanted, and yet when we arrive at the store two minutes after the doors open, it’s all sold out — but there’s another item for just a little bit more!

It seems that we’re seeing a lot of bait and switch in politics, which Merriam-Webster defines as “the ploy of offering a person something desirable to gain favor (such as political support) then thwarting expectations with something less desirable.”

Let’s go back to last year’s elections. There were two Democrat “moderates” running for governor: Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger in Virginia. Both of them won, yet both took a sharp left turn after the elections. How does this keep happening?

Unfortunately, most people in America have short attention spans. They listen to the political rhetoric and slick ads and vote without checking into the candidates’ records. Both Sherrill and Spanberger were political chameleons, blending in to be whatever the voters wanted them to be.

Now we have Texas Senate candidate James Talarico telling voters not to believe everything he said during his entire political career because he wants your vote in November. He was a vegan — until he wasn’t. He shares a checking account with his mom. He believes that there are six genders and that God is nonbinary. He loves gender-confused kids and wants you to believe he’s a real man — a true Texan!

As my brother Ron would say, Talarico is all hat and no cattle!

In Wisconsin, Assemblywoman Francesca Hong has radical policies, but now that she wants to be governor, she claims she has “evolved” in her opinions.

Both of these radicals will take a hard left turn if elected. “Don’t believe your lying eyes,” they tell us. This is what happens when voters don’t do their due diligence in selecting political candidates.

There was a time when Americans valued integrity and character in our elected officials. But starting with Bill Clinton and continuing with Barack Obama, we settled for personality and charisma (Joe Biden had neither) instead of godly character and integrity. We have to do better if our nation is going to survive this flood of radical candidates and confessed communists.

I’ve mentioned just a few of the political chameleons, but now, we’re starting to see blatant Marxists who are not hiding who they really are. The co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America told Fox News’s Shannon Bream about every radical policy the DSA intends to implement when in power: eliminate the Senate, eliminate ICE, open the southern border (again), give citizenship to every illegal alien, defund the Pentagon and police, and pack the Supreme Court. What could possibly go wrong?

The church needs to stand up to the insanity taking place across the country. I know many pastors feel like the political issues should just work themselves out. After all, we don’t want church members getting mad. Besides, as children we were admonished not to talk about politics and religion in polite company.

I’m pretty sure the Lutheran Church in Germany took that position in the 1930s as Adolf Hitler rose to power. How did that work out?

Politics will impact our ability to worship as we please. It always does. How we worship won’t be the only freedom taken if we do nothing. We need more Christian leaders to have the same spiritual courage Dietrich Bonhoeffer had. Anything less is moral cowardice!

Something to pray about!
