Want proof the Department of Veterans Affairs is dragging its feet to clear out the rotten, bureaucratic corruption from its system? The VA still hasn’t fired Sharon Helman, the former director of the Phoenix VA Health Care system – the place where the secret waiting lists were first discovered. Never mind the law Congress passed that made it easier to terminate VA employees. Never mind the Department of Justice told the VA it was okay to fire Helman. The VA still insists it will wait until the FBI finishes its investigation before handing out the pink slip. Meanwhile, Helman is on leave. Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake wrote to the VA Secretary in October saying, “The clearest example of your failure to change the culture at the VA is the continued employment of Sharon Helman. Ms. Helman and other senior leaders collected huge bonuses for the timely delivery of health care to veterans, many of whom died while awaiting care after being placed on secret waiting lists.
