Wow, COVID Relief Is a Sham, and Biden’s Trying to Sell It
He and Harris are traveling the country to build support for their $1.9 trillion boondoggle.
Democrats are the great diverters. Crisis on the southern border? Go on a national “help is here” tour celebrating your $1.9 trillion boondoggle!
That’s the strategy for President Joe Biden and President-in-Waiting Kamala Harris, who have embarked on a nationwide tour to sell their snake oil. They’ve wrapped up $1.9 trillion of nearly all NON-coronavirus spending, deceptively called it the “American Rescue Plan,” and are now trying to convince Americans that it’s good for them. That’s even while some Democrats are cheering it as what National Review’s Dan McLaughlin calls “the biggest progressive remaking of America since the Great Society.”
Democrats want the act to sell itself, but they know this two-faced approach is becoming known. Two weeks ago, Biden explained why they need a full effort at public relations: Back in 2009, after having passed the “stimulus” to “rescue” America from another Democrat-created crisis, Barack Obama was too humble.
We apologize for the coffee you just spewed on your keyboard.
“He didn’t want to take, as he said, a ‘victory lap,’” Biden recounted. “And we paid a price for it, ironically, for that humility.”
Spare us the historical nonsense. The real reason Biden and Harris are going all Shamwow is that popularity of the 2009 boondoggle tanked when people figured out what was actually in the bill. That and the rest of the Democrats’ radical agenda in 2009 and 2010. The Tea Party was born, and Republicans swept Democrats out of the House in the 2010 midterms. Clearly, Team Biden-Harris doesn’t want a replay of that fiasco, even if Democrats are … replaying that fiasco with their increasingly radical agenda.
Biden benefits from the fact that millions of Americans are seeing their IRS deposits show up already this week. But will people be quite as thankful when Democrats come back later and demand massive tax increases to “pay for” another spending spree on infrastructure and a pared down Green New Deal that then tanks the economy again? Will they not see the blatantly political nature of hundreds of billions of dollars spent to unnecessarily bail out out loyal blue states?
Biden and Harris will be amping up their huckster skills to fool as many people as they can, largely because the Democrats’ majorities are so small. The House is only 222-213, while the Senate is deadlocked at 50-50 with Harris as the tiebreaker. Both are a far cry from the majorities Democrats had in 2009. And they’re hardly majorities worthy of a true legislative mandate, much less for an agenda that so radically departs from bipartisan consensus or that quaint little document we call our Constitution.
