Thursday Executive News Summary

Leftist group sics protesters on justices’ homes, Fed hikes interest rates again, Sony refuses to bow to Beijing’s censors, and more.

Top of the Fold

  • Leftist group sics protesters on justices’ homes: The latest example of leftists’ reaction to their political agenda being stymied exposes yet again the real threat to the American Republic. Following the unprecedented leak of the U.S. Supreme Court’s likely decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Democrats and leftist groups have taken to the streets in loud protest. Of course, they have every right to do so. However, some of these leftist activists have gone a step further; they have identified and targeted the homes of what they call the “six extremists” on the Court — in other words, the constitutionally committed Supreme Court justices — directing protesters to go to their homes to harass them. “If you’d like to join or lead a peaceful protest, let us know,” says one leftist activist group. “Our 6-3 extremist Supreme Court routinely issues rulings that hurt women, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights. We must rise up to force accountability using a diversity of tactics.” Carrie Severino, president of Judicial Crisis Network, observed: “The radical Left and their dark money funders have one goal, which is to intimidate the Court. Showing up at the justices’ homes to harass them is absolutely beyond the pale and shows the lengths to which they are willing to go in order to undermine the Court’s independence.”

  • Fed hikes interest rates again: The Federal Reserve announced it is raising its benchmark interest rate by half a percentage point and not by the more aggressive three-quarters of a percentage point some had feared. The rate increase is aimed at stopping rising inflation, and it’s viewed as a positive indication that the Fed does not see a recession as inevitable. Still, the hefty hike is the highest since 2000. Fed Chairman Jerome “Transitory” Powell explained, “I think expectations are that we’ll start to see inflation, you know, flattening out.” The markets responded positively to the development, experiencing their biggest gain since 2020. The Fed is attempting the balancing act of raising interest rates to combat high inflation while at the same time avoiding negatively impacting the employment rate (the next jobs report comes out tomorrow). Powell noted that he anticipates further half-percentage interest rate hikes in the Fed’s upcoming meetings.

  • Sony refuses to bow to Beijing’s censors: The Chinese communist government’s censors recently demanded that Sony remove the Statue of Liberty from “Spider-Man: No Way Home” prior to its release in China. Lady Liberty is prominently featured during the third act of the film. Sony rejected China’s initial demands, which prompted the communist censors to come back with a minimization compromise: “If Sony could cut a few of the more patriotic shots of [Tom] Holland standing atop the crown, dull the lighting so that Lady Liberty’s visage wasn’t so front-and-center.” However, Sony again rebuffed Beijing’s compromise offer, putting the possibility for the film’s release in China in jeopardy. But this is not the first time the Japanese-owned entertainment company has refused to bow to Beijing’s censors — Sony refused to remove a portrayal of Bruce Lee from the Quentin Tarantino movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which led to China banning the movie. It will be interesting to see if the ChiComs’ own hunger for a piece of the box office profits will cause them to relent given the fact that the previous two Holland “Spider-Man” movies pulled in $116 million and $200 million in China. Finally, leave it to a Japanese-owned company to show American companies how to stand on principle over profit in responding to communist censorship bullies.
