News Cops Elevate Narrative Over Accuracy
NewsGuard, the self-appointed news media rating service, dubiously downgrades Fox News because of its conservatism.
Sometimes bias is difficult to identify, but other times it’s as clear as the nose on one’s face. Recently, the self-appointed news media watchdog group known as NewsGuard, which was established in 2018 ostensibly to track and rate various news media organizations’ journalistic standards, has shown that it’s just as biased as the news organizations it purports to watch over.
A case in point is NewsGuard’s recent decision to downgrade Fox News’s credibility rating while at the same time retaining the perfect rating of CNN, which has a lengthy history of blatantly biased reporting and fake news dissemination. NewsGuard dropped Fox News from 70 on its 100-point scale down to 57. According to NewsGuard, Fox News “fails to adhere to several basic journalistic standards” and “published numerous false and misleading claims, including about politics and COVID-19.”
The notion that CNN is much more journalistically sound and trustworthy than Fox News simply doesn’t pass the giggle test.
How about the fact that CNN, along with its print echo partners, The New York Times and The Washington Post, spent almost three years promoting and obsessing about the fake Trump/Russia collusion lie without correction or apology even after it was thoroughly debunked in 2019 by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller’s investigation?
Or how about the fact that these arbiters of digital truth propagated for months the abject lie that Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick was murdered by Trump protestors after being “bludgeoned” in the head with a fire extinguisher?
Furthermore, it’s rich indeed that Fox News’s “misleading” claims about COVID later turned out to be not so misleading after all — claims such as, oh, the Wuhan lab leak theory being so credible that now even Dr. Anthony Fauci is indicating it might indeed be the source of the pandemic.
Upon learning of its downgrade, Fox News responded with a bit of much-needed truth-telling: “NewsGuard is a for-profit organization operating under the guise of an objective public service. Their management and editorial teams rely heavily on left-leaning sourcing to attempt to silence diversity of thought in media. Fox News is proud of the coverage we provide our dedicated viewers, which is why we attract the most politically diverse audience in cable news.”
Fox News is exactly right. NewsGuard is yet another element of the elite mainstream media seeking to guard and promote its favored narrative and worldview. And you can’t get to any of NewsGuard’s ratings without paying for access. But the ratings aren’t so much relevant as is the fact that the Left now has another “objective” platform from which to cancel conservative voices.
Much like those Leftmedia “fact-checkers,” NewsGuard exists to dissuade people from getting their news and information from conservative sources. It would have us believe that all conservative media is bound by a blinding bias that prevents them from reporting the truth, when in fact the opposite is more often the case.
Indeed, it’s the mainstream media that long ago abandoned balanced and unbiased journalism in favor of promoting the progressive narrative — a narrative that comes before reporting the truth.
