DC’s Bowser Cries for the Guard

Not in her backyard, shrieks the open-borders mayor of our nation’s capital.

First she said they were “asylum seekers,” that it was a human rights issue, and that they were being “tricked” into boarding those busses and flooding into her fair sanctuary city. Now DC Mayor Muriel Bowser is crying for the National Guard to keep the unwashed brown masses away.

Isn’t that the essence of elitist liberalism? Everything’s swell when it’s just those faraway border states that are being overrun. Everything’s great when she can be big-hearted from a safe distance. But the minute they start to encroach on her territory, the minute she starts to feel a hint of the pain being caused by Joe Biden’s open-borders policy, it’s a “humanitarian crisis” and she’s screaming for the Guard.

Strange, but we don’t remember her calling for the Guard on January 6, 2021, when that relative handful of hooligans stormed the Capitol — even though then-President Donald Trump had authorized the deployment of as many as 20,000 Guardsmen.

We addressed Mayor Bowser’s caterwauling last week, but this call for the National Guard takes her chutzpah to the next level. She’s like the kid who killed her parents and then begged the judge for leniency because she’s an orphan.

We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating till we’re blue in the face: This didn’t happen on Donald Trump’s watch. And it’s not a coincidence that it didn’t. His “Remain in Mexico” policy was a smashing success, but the Biden administration’s approach has been an intentional failure. Democrats have long believed that if they could only make the country a bit browner, they could thereby establish a permanent electoral majority. After all, the brown-skinned vote Democrat, right?

We’ll just leave this right here. It’s the latest polling on Joe Biden among Hispanics. His approval rating has plummeted to an astonishing 19%. So much for the Democrats’ patronizing belief that brown-skinned Americans prefer open borders.

All this started back in April, when Texas Governor Greg Abbott unveiled what we thought was a brilliant, albeit gimmicky, idea: to begin delivering busloads of illegal immigrants from Texas to Washington, DC, in the hope of giving our nation’s lawmakers a taste of their own bad medicine. Of course, at approximately 20 immigrants per busload, we figured Abbott for bailing the Titanic with a soupspoon.

We were wrong. Both Bowser and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have sounded the alarm about migrants being sent to their cities, with both mayors blaming Abbott and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey for the influx.

“We are focused,” whined Bowser yesterday, “and we continue to be very focused on having the federal government do its part and take the lead in what we see as a growing humanitarian crisis with people who are seeking asylum coming across the country to get to their final destinations.”

Maybe it’s just us, but her tone toward these illegals doesn’t seem as welcoming as it once was.

“Washington, D.C. finally understands what Texans have been dealing with every single day,” said Abbott, “as our communities are overrun and overwhelmed by thousands of illegal immigrants thanks to President Biden’s open border policies.” But, he tweeted: “D.C. is experiencing a fraction of the disastrous impact the border crisis has caused Texas. Mayor Bowser should stop attacking Texas for securing the border and demand Joe Biden do his job.”

Abbott is obviously a gentleman; when it comes to rhetorical fisticuffs, he plays by Marquess of Queensberry rules. Not so his fellow Texas Republican Congressman Chip Roy. Bowser, he says, is “running to the Pentagon, saying, ‘Oh, my gosh, we need the National Guard.’ Oh, you know what? Cry me a frickin’ river. Welcome to the party, pal.”

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, himself the son of immigrants, broadened the scope of the attack. After all, Muriel Bowser is but one of dozens of sanctuary-city Democrat mayors. “Shame on all the liberal mayors who did nothing while we saw a record amount of people and fentanyl illegally entering into our country,” he said. “They didn’t care, or they ignored it, until it literally came to their front door.”

And that sums it up: “Not in my backyard!” shriek the do-as-I-say Democrats.
