GOP Senators Want Zuckerberg’s Hunter Biden Communications With FBI
Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley send letters to Facebook and the DOJ demanding answers.
Two GOP senators, Ron Johnson (WI) and Chuck Grassley (IA), sent a letter earlier this week to Meta (Facebook) CEO Mark Zuckerberg requesting the names of all Justice Department and FBI officials who contacted the social media giant to warn it against Russian disinformation. The letter read in part: “The American people deserve to know whether the FBI used Facebook as part of their alleged plan to discredit information about Hunter Biden. … If so, Congress and the American people require clarity with respect to the extent the FBI communicated with Facebook during the 2020 election about Hunter Biden-related information.”
Last week, the specter of the FBI running election interference in support of Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign was raised when Zuckerberg admitted Facebook effectively shadow-banned the sharing of news about the Hunter Biden laptop scandal after a warning by the FBI of a “Russian disinformation” campaign.
“Basically, the background here is the FBI I think basically came to us — some folks on our team — and was like, ‘Hey, just so you know, you should be on high alert,’” Zuckerberg claimed. He said the FBI told Facebook, “We thought that there was a lot of Russian propaganda in the 2016 election” and “there’s about to be some kind of dump that’s similar to that. So just be vigilant.”
Johnson and Grassley also requested the dates of when Facebook began suppressing the Hunter laptop story and a list of the Facebook employees involved in the suppression.
With a growing number of FBI whistleblowers contacting lawmakers regarding political bias within the agency’s leadership, the notion that the FBI would engage in election interference is more believable than not. On that note, Johnson and Grassley also sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray demanding any records related to the DOJ’s and the FBI’s contact with any social media company and specifically with Facebook regarding its warnings about Russian disinformation.
The letter stated, “The FBI’s consistent efforts to falsely paint information relating to Biden family misconduct as Russian disinformation continues to draw serious concerns.” Johnson and Grassley specifically took umbrage with FBI officials essentially peddling disinformation by classifying genuine information as “Russian disinformation.”
While the Biden administration and Democrats would love for this growing scandal to disappear quietly into the night, the fact of the matter is the stench of corruption is simply too strong. Republicans need to keep pushing hard on this story and promise to open up investigations should they retake control of Congress.
