Is Climate Important or Not?

The Democrats seem conflicted about whether to push the issue in the run-up to the midterms.

To no one’s surprise, a group of eight Senate Democrats is leaning on President Joe Biden to use his executive powers to declare a climate emergency. In a letter to the president, the lawmakers wrote: “The climate crisis is one of the biggest emergencies that our country has ever faced and time is running out. We urge you to act boldly, declare this crisis the national emergency that it is, and embark upon significant regulatory and administrative action.”

And just who are these elected officials looking to abdicate their legislative authority to the executive branch? They’re a who’s who of the hard Left: Senators Jeff Merkley (Oregon), Sheldon Whitehouse (Rhode Island), Edward Markey and Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts), Bernie Sanders (Vermont), Alex Padilla (California), Chris Van Hollen (Maryland), and Cory Booker (New Jersey).

Senate Dems have tried before to get Biden to act unilaterally on climate change, but he has so far resisted the idea. This time they are trying to leverage the recent passage of a $700 billion tax-and-climate spending package to push for even more action on vehicle emissions standards, to ban fossil fuel production on public lands, and to take other actions that if anyone in Washington cared about their constitutional oaths would be enacted by Congress — or, more accurately, not at all. There is even talk of filing a massive lawsuit against domestic oil producers.

The push for more climate action comes at a time when voters have other things on their minds. Climate change ranks far behind more pressing concerns like inflation, high gas prices, and illegal immigration. Younger voters still rank climate as a major concern, but they are not a reliable voting bloc and are thus unlikely to wield any influence on this year’s races.

Not a single one of the Eco-Theological Eight is up for reelection this cycle, which might explain why they’re trying to get their colleagues to keep the issue alive on the campaign trail.

Elsewhere, the ecofascists are working to shut down debate over climate change. A group of a dozen environmental organizations wrote an open letter to Big Tech companies accusing them of “amplifying and perpetuating climate disinformation.” (Where’s Scary Poppins when we need her?) The letter went to Twitter, Facebook, Google, YouTube, TikTok, and Pinterest, and it calls on these companies to do more to combat misinformation.

Will Silicon Valley do the Left’s bidding? Most of these companies line up ideologically with the environmentalists, so they may not see the harm in pushing the climate alarm narrative. What leftists really want is to control the climate change conversation. Anything that doesn’t fit their narrative can easily be labeled as misinformation, so we can expect even more censorship as free-thinking people start to question the wisdom of the Green New Deal and other “progressive” climate fiascos.
