LA City Council Rocked by Racist Tape Leak
Members were castigated for their horrible comments, but the hypocrisy is far deeper.
The Left’s veneer of multiculturalism and its intersectional coalition have been seriously marred. Hispanic Los Angeles council members Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, and Kevin de León, as well as Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera were caught on tape attacking a fellow councilman, Mike Bonin, and his adopted black son.
City Council President Martinez was the main instigator of the hateful remarks. She called Bonin a crude name because he’s homosexual and his son a “little monkey” in Spanish. The fellow members of the council went on to talk about how the child was a token to take to MLK parades and remarked that the interracial family was like a statue at a plantation in the Deep South. Martinez then complained that the boy deserved “a beatdown” after his behavior on a MLK parade float, saying, “They’re raising him like a little white kid, which I was like, ‘This kid needs a beatdown.’”
The most astonishing thing about this whole situation is the coverage. The council members were racist, but according to the critical race theory (CRT) proponents at The Washington Post and CNN, the only racism that matters was the racism toward the black child. The Post didn’t even mention that Bonin was white until close to the very end of the piece. True to the tenets of CRT’s identity hierarchy, it mentioned that he was homosexual before conceding that he was white as well.
Make no mistake: There is no justification for attacking and maligning a child the way they did. But the disgusting racism toward their white colleague is also disgraceful.
The main tenor of the criticism is focused on how their comments have ripped apart the years-long trust between the black and Hispanic communities in LA. According to Manuel Pastor, a professor of sociology, American studies, and ethnicity at the University of Southern California: “It takes years to build trust and seconds to tear it down — in this case a phone call that lasted less than an hour. There will be efforts to fix this, but people have been injured.”
In response to the backlash, Martinez said, “As someone who believes deeply in the empowerment of communities of color, I recognize my comments undercut that goal.” Subsequently, she resigned both as council president and her position.
Martinez, who was apparently also a Black Lives Matter advocate and pushed the defund-the-LAPD movement, enlisted several law enforcement officers to protect her and her home from leftist rioters.
People from both sides of the aisle and all races and creed are still calling for the resignation of the other three council members.
Leftists eating their own, being hypocritical, and being the exact opposite of what they claim are nothing new. As our Brian Mark Weber put it, the advent of political correctness and the formation of intersectional coalitions “has turned into cancel culture and censorship; multiculturalism has morphed into racial tribalism.” The LA imbroglio is Exhibit A.
This story is more than just black and Hispanic rivalry; it exposes the deeper rot of Democrats and their political motivations. Though they claim to be the Party of Inclusion™, these alliances are tentative at best and hostile at worst.
