The beginning of the downward spiral.
I started to write a column about illegal immigration, which would have been a fairly easy task, considering the latest "up is down" remark, courtesy of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson. He actually said people who thumbed their noses at the rule of law, even as they make a mockery of everyone who has emigrated to this country legally, have "earned the right to be citizens." I was then going to point out how the Republicans are determined to double down on the insanity, emerging from their annual retreat in Cambridge, MD with "a one-page statement of immigration principles," as if Americans are supposed to pretend every bit of what they propose isn't already the unenforced aspects of the 1986 immigration law. Easy stuff, but my heart wasn't in it.

Three sentences in Obama's speech defending the necessity of the NSA stood out to me. Let's examine each one. "Those of us who hold office in America have a responsibility to our Constitution." Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, America is currently enduring a Chief Executive whose contempt for the Constitution is unprecedented. Exhibit A is ObamaCare. Even as Democrats and the media hectored Americans to accept the healthcare bill as written because it was the "law of the land," Obama determined that a law passed by Congress and signed by him could be unilaterally "readjusted" to suit his political necessities. He also passed a version of the DREAM Act, unilaterally legalizing illegal aliens when Congress failed to do so. He has composed regulations limiting carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants, intending to bypass Congress once again, and use the EPA to impose his worldview by fiat.

In a column published in this space last week regarding former Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates' smackdown of Barack Obama, I delved into some long forgotten history regarding Democrats' quest to turn the public against America's involvement in Iraq. Despite the importance of maintaining unity in a nation during wartime, Democrats chose politics over country in an effort to capture the White House in 2004. Included in that column were a series of quotes, mostly from Democrats, utterly destroying the leftist-promoted notion that Iraq was strictly a "neocon" adventure. Since few things bother me more than revisionist fantasies, it is time to set the record straight once again. The subject here is the unmistakeable rise of al Qaeda in the Middle East, and the plethora of lies our current Commander-in-Chief told us to obscure that reality.

For all intents and purposes, California has obliterated the distinction between legal and illegal aliens. Last Thursday, the California Supreme Court ruled that 36 year old Sergio Garcia, whose parents brought him into the country illegally -- twice -- can obtain a license to practice law. The unanimous ruling illuminates the essence of progressive thinking: since Garcia has been living in the United States for 19 years, it is unlikely that immigration officials would pursue sanctions against him. "Under these circumstances, we conclude that the fact that an undocumented immigrant's presence in this country violates federal statutes is not itself a sufficient or persuasive basis for denying undocumented immigrants, as a class, admission to the State Bar," the court said in a unanimous ruling written by Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye. In other words, continually violating the law is an insufficient reason to deny someone a license to practice it.
Ominous signals that capitulation is on the horizon.
