Last week, during a radio interview, I was asked to describe the mood of the nation in one word. That's a tall order, but the host of the show inadvertently provided me with the answer: powerless. And nothing contributes to that sense of powerlessness more than a Washington D.C.-based ruling class seemingly determined to undermine our national sovereignty. That's why members of both parties are foisting the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal on a beleaguered public. I'd like to give you the details of the TPP, but a contemptuous Obama administration has decided to keep such information top secret. So secret that, even if you're a member of Congress and want information, you have two choices: you can attend a classified briefing that requires you to leave your staff members and cell phone at the door, or you can amble down to the basement of Capitol Visitor Center for a read. Again one's cellphone must be surrendered. And only one section at a time is provided, with someone watching over you as you read. If you take any notes they must be surrendered prior to leaving. After you leave, you are forbidden to discuss any aspects of the bill in public.

Writing for the Wall Street Journal, columnist Heather Mac Donald has chronicled one of the least surprising cause and effect stories afflicting America. "The nation's two-decades-long crime decline may be over," she writes. "Gun violence in particular is spiraling upward in cities across America." Why, as if one didn't know? "The most plausible explanation of the current surge in lawlessness is the intense agitation against American police departments over the past nine months," she explains. The stats are daunting. Homicides in Milwaukee are up 180 percent by May 17 compared with the same period last year. In St. Louis there's an uptick in shootings, robberies and homicide by margins of 39 percent, 43 percent and 25 percent respectively. Atlanta has seen a 32 percent spike in murders, Chicago a 24 percent increase in shootings and a 17 percent increase in homicides, and violent crime in Los Angeles was up 25 percent. And in Baltimore, where a somnambulant Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake gave rioters "space" to loot and pillage either by accident or design, the murders of a young mother and her 7-year-old child brought Baltimore's monthly homicide total in May to 38. By Sunday, the total had topped out at 43, making May the deadliest month the city has seen in more than 40 years.

With regard to ISIS, New York Post columnist Michael Goodwin deftly sums up the enduring cluelessness of our current president and his equally clueless administration. "The consequences of Obama's fecklessness fall most heavily on Muslims, Christians and Kurds in Iraq and Syria. But it will not end there," Goodwin explains. "Islamic State wants to attack America and, as its magazine says, 'do something big, something that would make any past operation look like a squirrel shoot ... something truly epic.' Is that what it will take to wake Obama?" The magazine to which Goodwin refers is Dabiq, which I have linked to here for two reasons: one, the quality and sophistication of this propaganda sheet should make it clear the only real "JV team" in this fight isn't ISIS. It's the Obama administration, whose eight month effort to "degrade and destroy" this bloodthirsty band of Islamist killers has done neither.

Two seemingly unrelated stories need to be linked together in order to more fully explain the dogged determination of an American left hell bent on fundamentally transforming the United States by any means necessary. According to a report by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, the backlog in federal immigration courts has reached an all-time high of 445,706 cases, representing a 30 percent increase since Oct 1, 2013. The principal driver of that backlog? Last summer's border "surge" that included "68,500 unaccompanied children and about as many family units crossing the southern border, most from Central America," the LA Times reports.

On Sunday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson confirmed what many Americans have long suspected: the Obama administration's response to ISIS will be reactive rather than proactive. In other words, it is quite likely American lives will be sacrificed on the altar of political correctness before anything is done to seriously counteract the growing threat posed by these bloodthirsty savages. "We're definitely in a new phase in the global terrorist threat where the so-called lone wolf could strike at any moment," Johnson told ABC's Martha Raddatz. "It is a new environment, but we are not discouraging Americans from doing the things they do on a daily basis."

Baltimore, Baltimore, Baltimore. In the space of a single week we've heard every theory, every rationalization, every speculation, good, bad and ugly, about what happened and why. Yet if truth be told, Baltimore is a symbol of something far more unsettling than the painful and largely inaccurate attempt to turn it into a metaphor about the racial divide that besets America. I say largely inaccurate because three of the cops charged in the case are black, including the officer charged with the most serious offense, second degree depraved murder. Yet there is a genuine divide afflicting America. It is the one between those who believe there is an over-arching code of morals to which society must adhere, and those who believe in the polar opposite, more familiarly known as anything goes. Quite simply there are millions of Americans who either don't know the difference between good and evil, and right and wrong — or simply don't give a damn. In their universe, life is an ever-evolving series of rationalizations allowing every type of execrable behavior to be justified.

It was essentially an open letter to the GOP following their rout of Democrats in the 2014 election, not because American love Republicans, but because they wanted the Democrat Party's odious agenda stopped dead in its progressive tracks. I noted that both issues are going to define Republicans "as fighters for ordinary Americans, or as the go-along-to-get-along, elitist, ruling class wimps you have been for quite some time." The two issues? Defunding the portion of the DHS budget enabling President Obama's amnesty-by-executive-order agenda, even if it meant invoking the nuclear option to do so, and preventing the confirmation of Loretta Lynch as Attorney General of the United States. In March the GOP caved on issue one, passing a budget with no strings attached. Last Thursday they doubled down on their cravenness, confirming Loretta Lynch as Eric Holder's successor. In short, millions of American voters were betrayed by elitist, ruling class wimps passing themselves off as an opposition party.
