Trump’s Long March Problem
A new president needs to staff his administration with people who will be loyal to him. Donald Trump’s problem is that he does not have enough loyalists to staff the White House, much less the entire executive branch.
An Uncivil Income Tax System
Each year in the United States, an estimated 6.1 billion hours are spent complying with the federal tax code. I’m pretty sure at least half of those hours are spent by me.
Reform the Tax Code Now!
President Trump has pledged to reform our tax code, which, to most people, currently reads like a foreign language. Trump said tax reform would be a top priority for his administration, but he is up against powerful lobbyists working for the tax preparation industry and also charitable and other organizations who want to keep things just as they are, since some donors would be less likely to contribute if they lose their ability to claim deductions on their taxes.

A Case for Preventing Children’s Scraped Knees
When not furrowing their collective brows about creches and displays of the Ten Commandments here and there, courts often are pondering tangential contacts between the government and religious schools. Courts have held that public money can constitutionally fund the transportation of parochial school pupils to classes — but not on field trips. It can fund nurses at parochial schools — but not guidance counselors. It can fund books — but not maps. Daniel Patrick Moynihan wondered: What about atlases, which are books of maps? On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will consider the constitutional significance of this incontrovertible truth: “A scraped knee is a scraped knee whether it happens at a Montessori day care or a Lutheran day care.”

Trump Drops MOAB
News broke just after lunch time Thursday that U.S. forces dropped a MOAB bomb (Massive Ordnance Air Blast) in Afghanistan. The bomb is also known as the “Mother Of All Bombs” for a reason — it is the largest non-nuclear weapon in the U.S. arsenal. The bomb is so big that it has to be dropped from the back of a C-130 cargo plane.
