Texas Bakers Face Threats After Declining to Bake Gay Wedding Cake

A small town bakery owned by a Christian family is under siege after they declined to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple. Edie and David Delorme own the Kern's Bake Shop in Longview, Texas, known around town for their petit fours and sugar cookies — and also their custom-made wedding cakes. The Delormes are also devout Christians — faithful members of a nearby Baptist church — and they run their bakery according to the tenets of their religious beliefs. That became a problem on Feb. 17th when Ben Valencia and Luis Marmolejo requested the bakers make a cake for their upcoming wedding.

The Coming Anti-Trump Onslaught

The anti-Trump onslaught is coming. Perhaps within weeks. Just not necessarily from Republicans. Almost as soon as Donald Trump is the presumptive GOP nominee — which may be as early as March 15 — Democrats will surely start to churn out their negative ads. They will attack Trump's credentials as a tribune of the little guy by focusing on a money-grubbing venture like Trump University, designed to extract as much cash as possible from people who thought they would learn something from the shell of a school.

USC Hates Hollywood

Walter Annenberg was a billionaire publisher and philanthropist, and a pal to Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, whose biggest enrichment came from selling TV Guide to one Rupert Murdoch. This week, a school bearing his name is ripping Hollywood to shreds from the hard left. The Associated Press breathlessly reported that in "one of the most exhaustive and damning reports on diversity in Hollywood," the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California put out a new report slashing at the "whitewashing" of our movies and TV shows. It's howling against an "epidemic of invisibility" for minorities (both racial and sexual) and declaring an "inclusion crisis."

Why President Trump Would be a Bigger Disaster Than President Clinton

There's still time to turn it around, of course. But now that many conservatives are moving from the bargaining phase to the depression phase of the Kubler-Ross model, we can begin to grapple with the prospective reality of a Trump-vs-Hillary general election. Whether you're an ideological conservative, a proponent of limited government or someone who believes that the president has too much power already, you shouldn't think of this matchup as a contest between horrifying candidates. Rather, you should ask yourself which scenario would be more damaging? I'm pretty sure you'd find that Donald Trump is the form of the Destructor.

Kasich Pushes Christians to the Baking Point

If you like the President Obama's position on religious liberty, then Governor John Kasich (Ohio) is the candidate for you. At [Wednesday's] University of Virginia event, Kasich's remarks on the clash between sexual liberalism and personal freedom were so extreme that they could've been mistaken for the current administration's. In one of the more stunning moments of the Buckeye's campaign, Kasich took direct aim at people like Aaron and Melissa Klein, who were ordered to surrender their First Amendment rights as a "price of doing business."

A Respectful Appeal to Trump Supporters

As a Reagan conservative this is a particularly difficult primary season. We finally have what many of us consider a near-perfect candidate on the issues at a perfect time in our history, but obstacles persist. Admittedly, it's not like America got in this desperate condition accidentally. For decades, we have been electing leaders who have been undermining the American dream, and in the last two presidential elections the majority has virtually furnished what could be the final nails in the nation's coffin. Thankfully, Obama had reverse coattails. His agenda was decisively rejected in both the 2010 and 2014 congressional elections, which led many of us to believe his policies weren't popular even if he was.

Good News: Abortion Clinics Closing

All across America, abortion clinics are closing at a record pace. According to a new Bloomberg analysis, more than 160 abortion mills have shut down since 2011, while just 21 have opened. Planned Parenthood took a big hit: "Of all the facilities in the nation that closed or stopped performing [abortions], about a third were operated by Planned Parenthood." The primary cause for the closures was the success of state-level pro-life initiatives. "State regulations that make it too expensive or logistically impossible for facilities to remain in business drove more than a quarter of the closings," the report notes.

Savile Case Highlights Danger of 'Culture of Deference'

I'm not sure I'd ever heard of Jimmy Savile prior to revelations that he was a monster. A hugely popular DJ and TV personality in the United Kingdom for decades, Savile lived a double life as a child molester and rapist. He abused older victims as well. His victims, many of whom were patients in hospitals, ranged from 5 to 75 years old. As a major fundraiser for hospitals, he had free rein to prey on boys and girls. He assaulted one 10-year-old boy with a broken arm while he was waiting on a gurney for an X-ray. He assaulted teenagers recovering from surgery in bed.

These facilities now function as forward bases for Beijing to challenge seven decades of American naval dominance of the Pacific Rim.

It's true that many voters are hopping mad that nothing ever gets done in Washington. Voters, especially the most conservative ones, are sick and tired of people who promise them the stars, the moon and the repeal of Obamacare to get elected, then go to D.C. and do nothing but make excuses about "divided government."

How Much Must We Compromise Our Values?

Robert Jeffress is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, TX. Jerry Falwell, Jr. is the President of Liberty University and son of moral crusader Jerry Falwell. Both have endorsed Donald Trump. Falwell has vouched for Donald Trump's strong Christian faith. Jeffress called Trump "a great leader, a great visionary and a great American." Both men have used their ties to the evangelical community to bolster Trump's credibility. But Trump has said repeatedly that he has never had the need to repent - a basic tenet of Christianity. The man has committed adultery, among other sins, is on his third marriage, says he has no need to repent, and Jerry Falwell and Robert Jeffress are lending their credibility to Trump's.

Silence Is Not Consent

You may have noticed I have been very quiet here at The Patriot Post. The reason is because the game is on and the pre-game talk is done. This El Niño is what I have been waiting for since the last one. And to me, it's a simple test. To review, I stated many times last spring that a major spike was coming in the global temperature due to El Niño, and as I called it, borrowing from an Old Buffalo Springfield song called "For What It's Worth," this would be a "Field Day for the Heat." I even went so far as to say that it would not surprise me if Al Gore, citing the major global warming spike, would come out and run for president with an atmospheric apocalypse agenda.

The Tough Choices of Overseas Intervention

The United States has targeted a lot of rogues and their regimes in recent decades: Muammar Gadhafi, Saddam Hussein, Slobodan Milosevic, Mohamed Farrah Aidid, Manuel Noriega and the Taliban. As a general rule over the last 100 years, any time the U.S. has bombed or intervened and then abruptly left the targeted country, chaos has followed. But when America has followed up its use of force with unpopular peacekeeping, sometimes American interventions have led to something better. The belated entry of the United States into World War I saved the sinking Allied cause in 1917. Yet after the November 1918 armistice, the United States abruptly went home, washed its hands of Europe's perennial squabbling and disarmed. A far bloodier World War II followed just two decades later.

Obama's Cuba Trip Is a Reward to Dictators

President Obama makes no secret of his eagerness to visit Cuba, but as recently as December he insisted that there would be no such trip until human rights and civil liberties on the island had improved. "What I've said to the Cuban government is, if ... we're seeing some progress in the liberty and freedom and possibilities of ordinary Cubans, I'd love to use a visit as a way of highlighting that progress," Obama told Yahoo! News. "If we're going backwards, then there's not much reason for me to be there."

A Pother at Old Georgtown

I am certainly glad that The Washington Post reported on a controversy at Georgetown University last week, which was created by the sad death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Thanks to that informative report, I am canceling my million-dollar bequest to old Georgetown and channeling it elsewhere, probably to Donald Trump's super PAC, if I can find his super PAC. The controversy arose because of a dean's perfectly civilized published statement of grief. A press release from the Georgetown Law School announced, "Georgetown Law Mourns the Loss of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia," a Georgetown undergraduate and summa cum laude graduate.

How the Affordable Care Act Continues to Fall Short

Of the seven main candidates running for president, only one wants to keep the Affordable Care Act in place: the Democratic kind-of-front-runner Hillary Clinton. Everyone else wants to get rid of it. Most Republicans would replace it by returning health insurance regulation to the states, although they would also lock in much of the ACA's new spending. Self-proclaimed socialist Bernie Sanders would replace it with a single-payer system — Medicare for all. It's a terribly inefficient and costly idea, as many pundits have explained.

The Schumer-Biden Test

Everyone knows the meaning of the word "hypocrite" and no one can claim absolute constancy when it comes to living a life consistent with one's stated values. But in this election year, hypocrisy is on full display. It is now being practiced with neither shame nor irony by leading Democrats, who once forcefully argued positions they have now abandoned. Definitions help focus the mind and so here is one for "hypocrite" from dictionary.com: "a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, especially one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements."

U.S. and Europe Should Reject Ayatollahs' 'Election' as a Sham

The American presidential election season so far has been simply amazing. Its unpredictability, liveliness and sometimes profoundly rancorous debates, are integral parts of our democratic system, something that we as Americans enjoy and often take for granted. A free and fair election is the bedrock of the democracy that the Founders of our country fought to provide. But the citizens of many countries are deprived of this and are striving dearly to achieve it as Founders of America did. A case in point is Iran.
